"Vernon."

It had taken approximately eight whole seconds for Seungkwan to register that when his boyfriend stepped through the door of their apartment, he was not alone. Wat first had to get past the initial jump his heart did whenever he came home (Vernon coming home to him at all was a sentence he'd never get used to). And Vernon liked to compare this response to that of a puppy getting excited when its owner stepped through the door.

However, today he was stopped short when his boyfriend, love of his life, held large bundle in his arms. It shifted, two dark, triangle shaped ears popping out of the sweater Vernon had used as a makeshift blanket.

Vernon gave him a sheepish smile. "Seungkwan?" he said.

Seungkwan did not flinch. "What are you holding?"

As if to respond, the bundle shifted once more and with the ears, a pair of bright green eyes followed, focusing in directly on Wat. It blinked at him. He blinked back.

"Vernon that is a cat."

"It is a cat, yes."

"Why do you have a cat, Vernon?"

Vernon looked like he was deciding whether or not to run. He shifted the cat in his arms, which it apparently was not a fan of because it wiggled right out of his grasp and onto the floor, bolting up the stairs. It was gone in seconds.

"Oi! Vernon!" Seungkwan yelled as Vernon dropped his stuff and booked it after the creature.

"Sorry!"

He sighed and shut the front door before going up.

The sounds of scuffling were what greeted Seungkwan once he reached the top of the staircase, eyes landing on Vernon one his hands and knees, trying to coax the cat out from under the sofa. There were so many things wrong with this situation, but he had to admit that the sight of his boyfriend trying his damn hardest to win the trust of a small animal was a little endearing.

Seungkwan toed Vernon's foot. "Hey, Sol! Forget about the damn cat for a second."

Seemingly giving up for the time being, he heard Vernon exhale loudly and pull himself into a sitting position, looking extremely put out. Which annoyed Seungkwan just a little because here he was, staring at this boy that he loved very much, who for some unexplained reason brought a cat into their house and has yet to tell him why. And now that cat was hiding under their couch, so unless they moved the entire hunk of furniture itself, it was not coming out unless it wanted to. If anyone should be put out, it was Seungkwan.

"Care to share?" he prompted once more, folding his arms over his chest. The frustration melted a little only upon seeing the pout on Vernon's very kissable lips.

Vernon folded his hands in his lap, fiddling. He had a lot of nervous ticks, this was the most common one. Over the course of their entire relationship he'd come to learn all the smaller nuances that made up Vernon . He thought he knew him inside and out by now, but this was not something he thought to expect.

"He was hungry! I was walking with Dino, and he came out of nowhere. So I was like, here's a small piece of my sandwich, right? No harm! But then he started following me and meowing and we'd stopped to pet him and I just couldn't leave him there to starve, okay?" Vernon's words were rushed as he tried to get all the words out as quickly as possible, only glancing up once he was finished.

There was a pause, only the sound of Vernon's harsh breathing could be heard like the admission took all the fight out of him.

Suddenly Seungkwan felt very tired as well. The irritation that lingered had dissipated almost completely as he let himself sink to his knees in front of his boyfriend. Both of them were scowling, albeit for very different reasons.

"I just wanted to help him," Vernon spoke again after a moment of uncomfortable silence, shoulders slumping.

Fuck, he hated it when he made that face. It took everything in him not to just pull him into his arms and tell him it was alright. Funny thing about it was that Vernon never even knew what he was doing to him half the time.

As if summoned by the tension, there was a soft shuffling from under the couch. From beneath the depths of the sofa, the cat wigged its entire body out and right into Vernon's lap. Between being bundled in a hoodie and then darting upstairs, this was the first time Seungkwan could actually see the animal in its entirety.

Its eyes were, in fact, green. Short hair, mostly brown. Stripes. A tabby? Is that what those were called? It didn't look like anything special. Vernon lifted a hand to stroke its head, distracting it from its staring contest with Wat. It was purring.

Seungkwan admittedly found this adorable and almost reached for his phone for a picture. But no, he had to focus. "You can't keep him, Vernon," he said, softer now, not wanting to look for an argument. Not that he ever wanted an argument. Sometimes things just came out of his mouth that way.

Vernon looked absolutely offended by this. "What? Why not?" He curled his body over the cat as if he expected Wat to snatch the thing out of his lap.

"You don't even know if its a stray! He could belong to somebody and just got loose. Does he look malnourished to you?"

Seungkwan gestured broadly to the cat, who just soaked in all the attention, half asleep and drooling on Vernon's legs. It didn't look anywhere near starving--in fact, it seemed like a diet was in order, honestly.

"And," he continued, "seems rather friendly. Aren't stray cats supposed to be scared of people?"

Vernon shrugged. "Not if they've been around humans for a long time. Could be used to them."

Seungkwan sighed for what felt like the tenth time that afternoon. "Okay, but that doesn't rule out anything else I just said."

Damn, it wasn't abnormal for him to be the voice of reason, but this just seemed like common sense, didn't it?

"There's no collar or anything, how am I supposed to find out who he belongs to then?"

"Make a vet appointment. Might be chipped."

"But--"

Seungkwan cut him off by putting his hand on his boyfriend's head, gently forcing his head into a nodding motion. "'Yes, Seungkwan-ah I will make a vet appointment,'" he said in a very poor imitation of Vernon's voice.

Vernon scowled and shook him off. "Oi, fine! But what if there's nothing? Huh? What then? I get to keep him?" he prompted.

Seungkwan blinked. Didn't think he'd get this far, honestly. "Vet," he said in lieu of a response.

"That wasn't a no."

He pushed himself to his feet and started walking away. "It's not sleeping in our bed."

"Still not a no!"

And with that, what followed was a bit of rustling, a soft thump, and the sound of Vernon's indignant squawking as the pillow hit him in the face.
