Chapter Eight
"..are you alright?" A very kind sounding voice asked.
M/n looked up and blinked twice. The last thing he could remember was being pulled into a portal after going to get some fresh air... and now, he was lying on his back, looking up at someone who looked like Sans, but had a completely different outfit and different sounding voice.
The skeleton had pretty lotus flowers on his skull, covering one of his eyesockets. His pinprick was a pretty orange-yellow, and the rest of his appearance was very sweet looking. He had a light pink cape on, which had some kind of heart-shaped brooch clipped to the front of it.
"Sir..?" The skeleton asked again. "Are you alright?"
M/n shook his head, pulling himself from his slight daze. He offered the skeleton an awkward smile, nodding.
"Mhm! Just peachy!" He answered, forcing himself to sit up.
As he propped himself up with his hands, he felt a sharp pain shoot up from his right wrist. He grimaced and brought his hand up to his chest.
"Ouch!"
As soon as M/n let out the noise of discomfort, the skeleton kneeled down next to him.
"Is everything okay?" He asked, placing a caring hand on one of M/n's shoulders.
"Yyeahhh... totally.. I think I just might have hurt my wrist..?" M/n tried to keep his cool, looking down at his hand.
The skeleton watched as M/n tried to move his wrist a little bit.
"Fuck!"
The skeleton winced, and let out a soft sigh. "Um.. well, before I take you inside, why don't I introduce myself..? My name is Lotus. I was just about to go hang out with my friends when a portal open a few feet up in the sky and then you fell out of it.."
"Once I find who opened that portal, I swear to Mother Miranda-- ahem." M/n cleared his throat and smiled apologetically at Lotus. "Lotus is a pretty name.. I'm M/n."
"M/n, hm?" Lotus smiled. "That name suits you."
"Really? Thanks.."
Lotus nodded and stood up, carefully grabbing hold of M/n's left hand to help him up. Once he was on his feet, he winced. Another worried look danced across Lotus' features.
"Everything okay, M/n?"
"I think I might have hurt my ankle, too."
Lotus sighed, "alright.. give me a second.."
The next thing M/n knew, Lotus had done picked him up and was now carrying him bridal-style, making his way towards an intimidating looking manor.
"Oh." M/n said, slightly flustered. "You don't have to carry me.."
"Oh, hush. You're hurt." Is all Lotus said in response.
When Lotus got to the front steps of the Manor, he used one of his feet to knock on the door.
"Can one of you dimwits open the door?" Lotus called out with a slightly playful tone of voice.
There was a moment of silence, then the dark wood front door opened, revealing another skeleton dressed in casual clothing. He had a red lightning bolt scar under one of his eyesockets. He had a slightly annoyed expression on his face, like he was just doing something he found joy in and was told to stop because he was incredibly annoying.
His outfit looked incredibly comfortable to M/n. A soft-looking black turtle-neck sweater, black sweatpants with white x's here and there, and grey slippers.
"M/n?" The sound of Lotus saying his name pulled him from his thoughts. "This is Cross, he's gonna check on you and make sure you've not got anything else wrong, okay?"
M/n nodded and looked around, now coming to realize that he was sitting on a comfortable couch in a dimly-lit living room. Lotus had left after letting him know what was going to happen, leaving M/n with Cross.
Cross got a bit closer to him and sat beside him on the couch. He said nothing at first, then he sighed.
"Sorry.. I, um.. not the best with the whole, small talk thing.. um.. what hurts..?" He said timidly, avoiding eye contact for a few moments.
"That's alright." M/n gave him a gentle smile, before pointing to his right wrist and left ankle. "My wrist and ankle hurts real bad, I'm not sure if there's anything else wrong with me.. but I fell from a portal in the sky, so... I mightve hurt my back.."
"A portal?" Cross asked curiously, raising a bonebrow as he gently took M/n's hand into his to examine his wrist.
"Yeah.. ouch." M/n winced slightly when Cross had pressed down on his veins slightly to check his pulse.
"Jeez, you must have really hurt your wrist if that hurts," Cross frowned, letting go of M/n's wrist. "I barely even touched you.."
"Yeah.. and it usually takes a lot to hurt me, so..." He trailed off, looking away.
Cross sighed and stood up. M/n looked up at him quizzically.
"Relax, I'll be back."
"Okay?"
In the blink of an eye, Cross was gone. He was starting to feel a bit uncomfortable, sitting on the couch by himself in silence. M/n felt like he was intruding.
Ten, maybe fifteen minutes had gone by and neither Cross or Lotus had returned. He had just met them, but he was starting to overthink. What if they found him annoying? What if they forgot about him? It wasn't like he could just leave with his ankle being hurt, so what was he going to-
"Would you PLEASE shut up?" A new voice complained.
M/n looked around in confusion, finding that he was still by himself.
"Who- oh." Before M/n could ask who was there, a goopy skeleton had formed from a small puddle of dark gunk that had bubbled up on the floor.
"I appreciate the negative energy, but you're giving me a headache."
"Who are you?" M/n asked, scooting back on the couch.
"Nightmare." The skeleton said.
"I'm-"
"You're M/n." Nightmare cut him off. "And you're hurt. You fell through a portal from Undertale."
"Okay, so, I have a stalker." M/n said with a rather forced grin.
"Har-de-har-har." Nightmare rolled his one turquoise pinprick.
"Sorry I took so long- Oh. Hello, Nightmare." Cross greeted the slightly menacing skeleton, carrying a small first aid kit. "I couldn't find the first aid, I didn't mean to leave you alone for so long."
"It's.. okay." M/n muttered, not looking away from Nightmare, even as Cross sat next to him.
M/n just stared at him with an uneasy look as Cross did whatever he needed to do. The silence was uncomfortable, but not unbearably so. Just enough to make M/n feel anxious. Nightmare simply stood there, arms crossed and face dripping with that black goop.
"Alright. You should be okay," Cross said suddenly, closing the first aid kit. "Just don't move around too much."
"Thanks.." M/n muttered, looking over at Cross.
He went silent again. "..I like your scar."
Cross' eyesockets widened a bit. He was taken aback for a moment before he visibly relaxed.
"Thanks... I like your smile." He complimented back, seeming slightly happier.
"Really?" M/n hadn't even realized that he'd started smiling.
"Yeah-"
"-Im going to my office, this positivity is giving me a headache." Nightmare groaned before storming off, leaving M/n and Cross alone.
