Chapter Seven
M/n had woken up to the sound of voices, one of which he recognized as Sans', and the other was completely foreign to him. Though he was almost fully awake, M/n didn't move from his position on the couch, his eyes still shut and his body curled up into a ball, enjoying the warmth and slight comfort that Sans' jacket was giving him.M/n tried focusing on the conversation Sans was having as he pretended to still be asleep. He wasn't one to eavesdrop, usually Frisk was the one doing that. As he listened, he almost instantly heard the slight unease and uncertainty in Sans' laid-back voice.
"Uh.. yeah.. this hasn't happened before," Sans said, "I've been through thousands of RESETS and it's always just been Frisk who fell down.. so why was this time different, Ink?"
Ink? Who was Ink? And what were resets?
"Well, pal, I'm not too sure." The other person responded, who was presumably named Ink, a very clear tone of curiosity and interest in his voice. "...I have an odd feeling that something like this has happened before, but I can't seem to remember anything about it... ahah.."
"You're still such a scatterbrain, huh?" Sans chuckled, though M/n was sure that it was an anxiety response.
"It's not very easy to remember everything that happens to you when you're a guardian of the multiverse, Sans." Ink scoffed.
There was a moment of silence, then the sound of feet shuffling closer to the couch. M/n kept his eyes closed tightly, trying to make it seem like he was still sleeping.
"Give it up, kiddo. I know you're awake."
M/n groaned and opened his eyes, blinking away the bit of sleepiness that lingered.
"Why would you talk about stuff that I probably shouldn't be hearing if you knew I was awake?"
Sans simply shrugged; Ink gasped softly and M/n watched as his pinpricks changed shapes and colors.
"Your eyelights are awfully pretty." M/n said with a grin, momentarily forgetting about introducing himself to the curious looking skeleton. "..oh! I'm M/n, by th-"
"-I know." Ink cut him off, a slight rainbow tint dancing across his skull at M/n's compliment. "And thank you."
"....how do you know my name?" M/n tilted his head and stood from the couch, crossing his arms and- "holy hell, you're short."
Sans held back a laugh as he watched Ink shrink back a bit when M/n stood up. The human was towering over him!
"I know everyone's names! Well, I mean, sometimes- it's hard to remember names when you've got Creators know how many AUS and timelines and to look after and protect and then all of the countless RESETS--"
M/n blinked twice.
"RESETS." M/n said, glancing at Sans. "Sans, you said something about Frisk and thousands of RESETS and I've never fallen down with them... Is that why everyone has been acting as if they've met Frisk before? And Frisk- they've just been trying to get out of here-- WHAT IS GOING ON?!"
Sans said nothing, his eyesockets going dark. There was a moment of severely awkward silence, then Ink spoke up again.
"Well, for starters, RESETS do exactly what you think they do; they reset all of the progress. Which in turn creates new timelines, ya da ya da ya da, then the Alternate Universes are like this place, but The Creators put their own spin on things and change the stories and roles and- how odd. I'm looking at you, and you look and sound so familiar. Like someone I used to be very close to-"
