~ EPISODE ONE ~
#01 | TROUBLE — girls just want to have fun , cyndi lauper " I wish I had a boyfriend like him "
THE EVENING WEATHER beat down on the two girls as they exited the mall doors, bags slung over their shoulders and looking like they couldn't be more happier.
School was over and summer break was on the brink of approaching.
"Haeun," Rei intertwined her hand through her best friends. "I'm so glad we got to hang out before summer break!" The girl on her left nodded in agreement. "I can't believe your parents won't let you go out," Haeun pouted slightly. "That must suck."
The two had been hanging out at the mall as soon as the bell that signalled dismissal time had rung. Now, the sun had already set and the stars were twinkling.
Rei smiled sadly. "I know," she scoffed. "They want me to focus on my studies instead, but we can still keep updated online, right?" Haeun nodded, checking a notification on her phone. "Yeah, of course!"
"Is Jihoon still picking you up?" Rei asked, leaning over Haeun's shoulder to get a better view of her phone. "Yep, he's like thirty seconds away" she typed something back.
Rei snuggled in closer. "I wish I had a boyfriend like him" she said sadly. "Come on Rei, you're so pretty you could get anyone you wanted!" Haeun added, making a smile appear across her friends face. "Really?" Rei asked, and Haeun nodded. "Yes, really."
The two had now reached the main road. "That's my ride there," Rei said, pointing to a fashionable black car parked just to the right. She let go of Haeun's hand and clutched the bag on her shoulder tightly. "Be online, ok?" she added. Haeun nodded, a smile appearing on her lips.
"I will, get home safety!" she called out. Rei slipped her one last smile and a wave out the window as the car drove off. Haeun let her hand drop to her side, her smile fading as well.
Before she had time to even take another breath, another car pulled up, this one a deep purple. Loud music was blasting from the stereos and the engine revved dangerously as it came to a halt just before Haeun.
She clutched her bag and moved forward, opening the door and plopping down onto the passenger seat. The boy next to her just turned down the music and drew the window up.
Haeun clicked in her seatbelt, adjusting it slightly. She turned to the boy next to her. "Jihoon," she said breathlessly. "Hi." He smiled, looking into her brown orbs. "Hi, love," he leaned forward, placing a small peck on her lips. "I'm dropping you off home, right?" he asked, and Haeun nodded.
"How was your trip with Rei?" he asked, and Haeun turned towards him. "It was so fun! We went shopping and went to arcade! And do you know that girl from my school, Han Hyeju?" she asked, and Jihoon's eyebrows furrowed in thought.
"The girl that once chased you down the street for accidentally breaking her pen?" he asked, and Haeun broke into a small laughter. "Don't forget, it was a 'specially engineered mechanical ballpoint pen with golden flakes'" Haeun quoted between giggles. "Anyways yes, that girl."
"What did she do this time?" Jihoon glanced briefly towards his girlfriend before placing his eyes back on the road. Haeun pushed a strand of her hair away from her face. "Well, we bumped into her today and she literally almost pushed Rei down the escalator. Like we didn't even do anything to her and she was just so mean," Haeun turned her head as she faced the window.
"You know what Haeun," Jihoon said, and Haeun hummed a small "yes", eyes still glued to the window. "Some people are just like that. You have one bad encounter with them and they hold a grudge against you for the rest of your lives."
"Yeah," Haeun agreed. Something on the floor caught her eye. "What's this?" she muttered to herself, picking it up. It was a woman's lipgloss, perfectly pink. "Who's lipgloss is this?" she asked, and Jihoon looked at it briefly before looking back on the road. "Oh that. That's my cousin's. Just leave it in here, I'll drop it off to her house after."
"Alright," Haeun said, the frown on her face easing slightly. "It's so warm," Haeun said, stifling a yawn. "You must be sleepy," Jihoon said, placing his hand on her knee, rubbing it softly. "Close your eyes for a bit. We are just a couple of minutes away."
"Only because you said so" Haeun mumbled, closing her eyes. She really liked Jihoon. He was nice, handsome, sweet, caring, anything and more anyone could ask for.
The two had met two years ago, when Jihoon was in his final year of high school and Haeun was still in eleventh grade. He claimed it was love at first site.
It also happened to be that their fathers were both good friends. Very close friends. Both of them graduated from the same university, majoring in app development. Jihoon's dad had launched the viral "MyCreate" website making app only a few months before and it had been a viral success.
She liked him so much she couldn't believe he liked her back. Maybe it was too good to be true. Maybe she was just so obsessed in her own love that she failed to see that it was unrequited.
But Haeun didn't let those thoughts infiltrate.
As she felt the car take the familiar route down to her house, her eyes fluttered awake. Sure enough, there it stood. Her families mansion was rather large and modern, being built just before she was born.
It was a gorgeous estate, with elegant architecture and large windows which allowed the summer light to drift in perfectly. It had a large backyard, full with classy furniture and heap full of memories.
"Babe," Jihoon said softly, tucking Haeun's hair behind her ear. "We're here." Haeun smiled at him, unbuckling her seatbelt. She opened her door, careful to take her school bag with her as she exited. "Thanks for the ride," she thanked him.
"Anything for you" Jihoon smirked. "Well, bye bye!" he waved with a toothy grin. "Bye bye!" Haeun said, watching him as he drove off.
She was so in love with him that she failed to see what was happening to her. And she didn't deserve any of it.
