Galen got out of bed in a hurry. He ran to the bathroom and vomited the contents of his stomach into the toilet. He gasped for breath for a moment. He felt Morgan's cool hand on his bare back and on his hair. He coughed and stood up, taking the glass his Mate was handing him. He rinsed his mouth.
"Two weeks... sixty more days. She's going to kill me." Galen complained.
Morgan rubbed his back and kissed his temple, "She's pregnant and that must frighten her."
"I know, I know. I know damn well she is! Oh..." Galen said, shaking his head.
He fell back on his knees, vomiting again. Galen rested his forehead against the earthenware. He was sweating.
"This is hell..."
He looked up at Morgan, who was watching him with concern. The words came out without Galen being able to hold them back
"I'm warning you. I forbid you to put a baby inside me!"
The pain he saw in Morgan's eyes made him bite his lips in regret. It had been the Ulfark's dearest wish for over a year since they had been Mates, but the current situation was not good, and their Wolves did not want it either. Galen let Morgan help him up and rinse out his mouth once more. Galen snuggled into his Mate's arms, trembling. It was September and the crisp dawn air made Galen shiver. It was his first winter in Minnesota. The air here was more humid, which drastically changed the way he felt about temperatures. He felt cold all the time. Morgan took him to their bedroom and put him to bed, lying as usual on top of his Mate and wrapping his body around his to keep him warm. They were now living in one of the new cottages built around the Amaroq Pack, in the woods of the Lake Superior National Forest, near the Canadian border. The Amaroq territory had become a welcoming place since the attacks. Discreetly, cottages had been built deeper in the woods to accommodate them. The advantage of the Amaroq territory was that it was vast and its protection meant that the Wolves could be hidden. It was the power of the Alpha taken to the extreme, but that was the way the world was now.
The Wolves had been in hiding for several months now, those who lived in the city and had a job and a life were hiding their true nature. Wolves no longer howled at the full moon. The weaker ones lived near the Amaroq. Territorial tensions were sometimes high, but living openly among humans was no longer an option. The "purge" against the Wolves continued, but it had become so commonplace that the media rarely paid more than a line or two of attention to it. Humans preferred to forget about it and pretend it didn't affect them. Meanwhile, the wolves were dying. Galen sighed. There was hope.
His sister and Eric had married legally, despite Lena's difference, in the spring and she was pregnant. They lived in the Amaroq house, which had been converted so that the young couple could have a wing as a home. It was the best solution. The presence and power of the Omega helped Maeva because the Amaroq was ill. He felt each loss through his bond: the pain and grief weakened him. Other Omegas regularly came to support Lena and the old Omega. This close proximity meant that Carmen could look after Lena like a hen looks after her chick, and everything was going well for her. Galen was relieved. Despite his sister's progress in controlling her emotions, every morning for the last two weeks Galen found himself vomiting, suffering morning sickness at the same time as his sister. Exhausted, he went back to sleep.
Morgan slowly got out of bed. He looked at his Mate, still fascinated by his beauty, which he himself seemed to ignore. He tore himself away from the contemplation of his Mate. He had things to do. After a quick shower he got dressed, wearing dark colours as usual. A black turtleneck jumper and black jeans. He prepared the breakfast Galen would find when he woke up and put on a jacket before leaving the cottage. The air was fresh enough for a light cloud of steam to escape his mouth as he took the winding path towards the Amaroq's house. The few trees that weren't pines had started to turn orange and the leaves were falling on the path through the many stretches of water. Their cottage was a good twenty minutes' walk away, more in the nature. He looked up as the supply plane skimmed past the pines. He could hear the sound of hammers in the distance. More cottages were being built. The Amaroq pack had tripled in size. So had the Minneapolis pack. Colin had gone back to help his father-in-law manage the pack between two missions.
