After his initial panic, Morgan noticed that Galen's shoes and coat were still there. Then he knew. He closed his eyes and looked for his link, which he found immediately. It was warm, it vibrated and, above all, it called to him. He ran into the chalet, grabbed the little bag containing everything he needed and took out his phone to call Eric.
"Galen's disappeared. I think... I think he's gone into labour."
Eric sighed heavily.
"That explains why Lena's been having contractions for two hours."
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
He slammed the cottage door and started striding down the path that led to the campsite.
"Because that little rascal hadn't told anyone. Do you know where Galen is?"
Morgan stopped abruptly. His eyes wandered off into the woods.
"I'm going to find him. He can't be far."
"As soon as you find him, let me know so I can send a medical team. Hey Morgan?"
"What?"
"Everything's going to be fine.
Morgan, who was running through the branches, smiled before hanging up. He could feel the bond between him and Galen palpitating like never before. Without realising it, he transformed into a wolf and, bag in mouth, ran towards his Mate. A short distance from their cottage was a cave that Galen had discovered on one of his daily walks. It wasn't very deep, barely fifteen metres, but deep enough to shelter in, and its entrance was protected by another rock. Without really realising it, Galen had started to bring in blankets and cushions. He was creating a den for his Babies. It was instinctive. With the first real contraction, Shh took the upper hand over Galen, pushing him back. He transformed and ran off towards his den. It was a secret place. A place all his own. No one would find him there. No one would hurt them. No one would take his babies. Only one person was allowed in and that was his Mate.
Shh slipped into the cave, lying down and waiting. The contractions had continued and increased as the moon rose. It wasn't perfectly full yet, but Shh could feel it calling to him, despite the thick clouds carrying the smell of snow. Time passed. The contractions were getting closer but Shh waited. He waited for his Mate.
The Beast arrived at the entrance to the cave. He could feel his mate. He resumed his human form but kept his blue eyes.
"Hey there, Sweetheart. Hello my life."
On his knees he crawled into the warm cave. He set the bag down further and took out a storm lamp, which he switched on as darkness fell. He approached Shh, who lay panting, his stomach tense. Morgan ran his fingers through the short, thick hair of his Mate, sharing his scent and giving him courage. In the distance, the songs of the wolves rang out. First the short, hoarse cry of the Alpha gathering his wolves together, then came the Betas' song in two parts, resuming at the end of the Alpha's range, carrying the power of the pack... then the yapping, giving the impression that the pack was legion and finally the Omega's song. Soft and light, to bind the group together. Shh let out a long sigh and his body trembled as, before the amazed eyes of Morgan and the Beast, the miracle of life took place.
The first was born. It was small and dark. Morgan took its first born delicately between his hands, it held on both palms together in a cup. It was a wolf cub, grey and white like him, except for his brown-spotted muzzle and the tips of his paws. His nose was pink and wet and, despite his small size, he made lively squeaks. He wrapped him up in a blanket and tucked him up against Galen as the second, bigger one arrived. This one filled his palms and was brown and sandy, like Shh but with a totally grey-black top. As gently as ever, he wrapped it in a blanket too, the little thing already clamouring for its meal. He didn't realise that he was crying until he realised that he couldn't see clearly. The little wolves grabbed one of Shh's teats to feed. Shh, exhausted, lay down flat and closed his eyes. Morgan was on his knees, his hands over his eyes, his body curled up, sobbing loudly. Shh moaned for his Mate, who lifted his face and crawled on his knees, burying his face against the neck of the sand-coloured wolf.
