Alex
I wake up to an empty bed. I sit up, looking around the room. She's not in here. There's a thud from outside. I get out of bed and follow it to the front door. It's already open and I step through the threshold to the cold morning. Imogen is outside. She's wearing leggings and a black tank top with combat boots. She looks like Tris from Divergent almost. In fact she's throwing knifes at a tree. She makes no noise as she throws it, the only sound the knife digging into the wood. She threw them in a direct line going down the tree. Starting from the first branch, and throwing the last one at the roots.
She wipes the sweat off her forehead with the back of her hand and goes to retrieve them. She starts taking them out from the bottom and working up. I watch as she got towards the last two towards the top and couldn't reach them. She starts jumping but still can't pull them out at the same time. God knows dogs don't climb trees.
I walk over to her and reach up grabbing the knifes and pulling them out. She steps back as I do so and I hand them to her. She nods at me. "Thanks."
I look down at her lips, wanting to continue where we left off last night. I look back up at her eyes. "No problem." We stare at each other for a moment, before I hear a familiar sound. I snap my attention to where I think it came from.
"You okay?" She asks me. I shake my head. "Whats wrong?" I finally look at her, to see she's worried. I run a had through her hair, fire rushing through my blood, and rest it at the base of her neck.
"It's just a memory."
"With?" She asks. I take a breath before answering.
"My sister." I nod. Her eyebrows furrow.
"I didn't know you have a sister." She says, almost betrayed.
"Had." I correct. She widens her eyes and takes a breath through her nose.
"What happened?" I'm glad she didn't try to coddle me.
I lean against the tree and fall down till I'm leaning against it. I pull her towards me. She sits with her back to my chest and in-between my legs. She plays with my fingers as I talk. "Her name was Christa, but everyone, and I mean everyone, called her Chris. Anyway, I was nine and she was 14. We were walking in the woods because at the time, we had nothing to be afraid of. Chris, of course knew the woods better. Her and her friends were always coming out into the woods to do random stuff. And, well one day she was stuck with me because our parents were away. She wanted to go to some party, but she sucked it up and put on a smile. I knew she was unhappy, but what was I supposed to do, you know?
"Anyway, We were walking through the woods, and theres this nose. It's small, but its there. I turn to Chris to tell her, but she's not there. I'm panicking because at the time I thought she went to go check it out. She's only 14. She may be the daughter of an Alpha, but she hasn't shifted, she's not that strong yet. So I call her through mind link, obviously knowing better that if there is something or someone out there, don't let them know you're there.
"So I'm panicing, totally don't know where she is because she's still my sister. She may still be older but I wanted to protect her. But she's not answering the link and I'm really getting worried. So, after a minute or so, I finally contact my parents. I tell them what happened and they tell me they're on their way. I feel a little better now. I mean, the parents I always looked up to were coming to save her, I should't worry. So, I turn back to the house and this hand clamps my mouth. I'd trying to call for my parents but I can't, and then I realize it's Chris. I calm down and she finally lets me go.
"She says, 'Alex, I should have told you a long time ago.' And you know, now I'm worried, and so I want to ask her what she means, but then this huge wolf, I mean absolutely huge wolf comes out from the woods. I'm totally terrified; I have no idea what's happening, but she pets the wolf. She shows no fear and so I show no fear. I remain quiet, so she'll tell me herself. She turns to me. 'You know that story mom used to tell us?' She asks. And of course I immediately know what story because our mother only told us one story. She says, 'Well, there's the rebellion. You know, the one dad is always stressing about right?' She asks. And I nod, still confused. She grabs my shoulders and she looks me dead in the eye and whispers. 'Don't tell mom and dad.'
