‘2:00 AM'

The digital clock kept on the bedside table showed it was 2 in the morning and there were no traces of sleep in Bondita's eyes.

Tomorrow was her wedding to Saiyam.

She was supposed to be in deep slumber right now. And she had been trying hard to fall asleep since the last 3 hours. After all, who would wish to be found yawning at their own wedding?

What if she falls asleep during the rituals? Was one of the thoughts roaming in her mind.

Just one of the countless thoughts.

She didn't know why, she didn't understand; but there was a strange uneasiness eating her up. An urge she didn't want to admit she had. An urge to run away.

Yes, Bondita Chakraborty wanted to run away the night before her wedding.

But she didn't even know why and to where.

She had no one and nowhere to run away to. She had no reason to run away. Yet, she wanted to. She didn't have anyone else in her life. Yet, she felt that getting married to Saiyam was a sin, like this is not what was meant to happen. She didn't know another place that she could call home. Yet, she felt there was a safer place somewhere else. A place calling out to her.

A crunch sound broke Bondita's chain of thoughts. Her eyes moving from the ground to the worn out jomidaar bari standing tall in front of her. Old yet firm. Like it had spent decades withholding storms yet never let its roots shake.

She had seen this haveli before. The jomidaar bari of her home town, Tulsipur. The one that once was magnificent enough to bewitch any passer-by with its beauty.

However, it was old now. Very old. Dim and empty. A haunting reminder of what used to be and what is.

The old haveli that once gave shelter to its residents had no one to look after it today. It stood alone, abandoned. Surrounded by years of uncleaned dust, leaves and broken tree branches.

Looking at the haveli, nobody would have the guts to enter. But to Bondita, it provided a sense of comfort. Like she had spent a lifetime here and could spend the rest of eternity here. It looked foreign yet familiar to her.

So, this was the place calling out to her. The Roy Chaudhary Haveli.
