Chapter 20
Farrah
I turned 18 that winter, and graduated that summer. I don't want to leave Abyasa. He's always there for me, To support me. He got me out of jail, protected me, and helped me. I wonder if he feels the same way as me? It's official, I am an adult now, but I don't know what I want to do with my life. So, I went to career counseling. I hope that they can help me.
I knocked on the door.
"Hello." I said, as I opened the door, "I'm Farrah Eka. I'm here for career counseling?" I stood in the doorway. The woman at the desk in the middle of the small room stood up.
"Hi!" She said, reaching forward to shake my hand. "I'm Ms. Agung. I'll be your career counselor for the next few hours." I shook her hand.
"Glad to meet you Ms. Agung."
She told me to take a seat in the chair that sat in front of her desk, while she closed the door behind me. Then, she took her seat, and pulled out a clipboard. Always with the clipboard.
"So, why did you decide to join career counseling?" She asked.
"I don't really know what I want to do with my life. I'm always overcoming little things, that I never really thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, and now that I am, I'm stuck."
"Ah." She wrote something down on her clipboard. I felt nervous, like I was being interrogated again. Which just made me think about how I met Abyasa. The thought helped me calm down. "So, Farrah. What are things that you're good at?"
"I would say that I'm good at puzzles, and problem solving. I've always been good at predicting outcomes for things and when to take initiative."
"Hmm." She fiddled with her pen. "Have you thought about being an entrepreneur? Or do you feel like you're not creative enough?"
"Actually, I've never considered creating my own business. That might be a good idea, though."
"Do you have any ideas that you feel like would benefit the world as we know it?" She said, once again writing stuff on her clipboard.
"Dreams. Using dreams to create energy. Dreams are something that I've found really interesting over the last two years, and I've thought about how everyone dreams. If we could find some way to connect them and use that as an energy source, that could help benefit the environment and people." I said, fiddling with my shirt. This was an idea that had been growing since I first met Arron.
"Do you have a way to fund your project?"
"Not at the moment, no. But thank you for helping me decide what I want to do." I said. If I can figure this out, I might be able to help Arron. Maybe I can reach him. I stood up.
"So, you've already decided?" She asked, raising her eyebrows while setting the clipboard and pen down.
"Yes, thank you for helping pinpoint what I want to do." I said, opening the door to leave her room. I can do this, I just need some way to fund all of this. I closed the door behind me.
That night, I told Abyasa about my idea. He thought that it was pretty interesting. He started to help me think through it a bit more, before we both decided that we were going to create this company together.
"Oh, yeah." He said, "After dinner, I have something to show you."
"Okay." I said, through a mouthful of babi. He smiled at me, and continued to eat the dinner that he'd created. I finished pretty fast, so I watched him eat. I couldn't believe that I'm going to leave this house soon. I might never see him again. To never see Abyasa again would be the worst. I put my dishes away, just to find something to do. Then, I decided to wash the dishes. Being bored is the worst, it makes you willing to do anything.
"I can't believe that you're doing the dishes." Abyasa said, leaning on the wall behind me. I rolled my eyes.
"I'm leaving soon. I've got to do the dishes once or I can't say that I really lived here."
He wrapped his arms around me. "Do you have to leave?"
"What do you mean? Of course I have to. I can't stay here forever. I have to go out and live on my own." I said, and yet my eyes started to blur. "If I stay here, I won't learn to live on my own."
"Okay." He said, but he didn't let go of me. "I still have to show you something, so go to the living room when you're done." And then he left. I still feel the shadow of his arms around me. My chest began to feel tight, You can't rely on him forever. You can live alone, It'll all be okay. Being alone isn't the end of the world.
When I finished with the dishes, his and mine. I went to the living room. It was pitch black.
"Hey, what did you do to the lights?" I said, reaching for a light switch. I felt his hand grab mine. "What do you want, you weirdo?" I asked, rolling my eyes even though I knew he couldn't see me.
"Come here." He whispered. His hand led me into the middle of the living room. He sat me on the couch and left. He turned the lights on, and I saw him holding a ticket.
"I... I thought that since you wanted to leave. That you might want some help?" He handed me the ticket. It read "From Surabaya, Indonesia to New York, The United States of America" on it. I gasped.
"You.. You want me to go to the U.S.? Really?" I said, absolutely astonished.
"Yeah. I thought you might want a fresh start. There's just been so much shit that has happened to you here, so you might've wanted to leave? Am I right?" I nodded. I can't believe this.
"The only thing I ask of you is that you don't forget me, please." He held my hands, and I pulled him into a hug.
"Thank you." I whispered over and over again.
