Hunter
Maya. What a soothing name. It made me feel as if she was living in her world where she had learned to cope with every single trouble thrown at her. When I thought of her, the moon looked even brighter, even more beautiful because finding her was like finding the solution to my troubles though she did not do anything.
She looked unharmed and unarmed. As if void of any misery, she was pure. But I was impressed, so much so that it made me feel giddy inside. Her facade impressed me. The cover she used to veil herself was so thick that if I had not talked to her last night, I would have felt as if she was like the rest of mankind. Insignificant.
I smiled to myself. Last night was terrible but I am glad I found her. She made me feel good. Almost like the time when I had my first kill.
“I am leaving,” I said and tried to ignore my family on the table. But I was wrong to think that anything goes past my mother.
“Wait a while, young man.” She looked at me.
I stopped and faced her. She looked at me as if I committed genocide. “Did you fail in your math test again?” She asked. Her tone was accusatory.
I bit the inside of my cheeks. “Yes,” I replied.
She sighed. “What did you get?” She asked, fixing her glasses.
“37.8,” I said and tried to leave when her voice stopped me.
“No going out past 7 PM. I am taking away your phone and your blanket at night. You should feel the cold and get used to it. I mean, who knows where you end up in the future.” She said,
I digested her words and left for school. Though it was unlikely that she would talk to me in the morning, her sneakers to my presence were nothing new. I sighed and got inside the car. There was a test today and after that, I had to go to the hospital to meet my beloved friend who was injured and hit on the head quite severely.
I arrived at the backside of the school and parked my bicycle. The wind was chilly and Autumn leaves crunched on the ground as I walked up to the hallway. My classmates spotted me from afar and most of them came and jumped on me giving me a bro hug. I hugged them back and plastered a huge smile on my face.
After talking, we headed to the classroom. The first lesson was Maths, I remembered. The teacher came in with his usual bored face. He looked like he was tired after an entire 8-hour shift. He took attendance swiftly as everybody took out their books. I looked outside the window.
The class was getting noisy as the teacher turned around scribbling on the board. In the school of Elites, nobody studies. My mother loves to impose the fact that I must score my A’s every year so she could flaunt her useless son being good at something, at the very least. Unfortunately, I did not let that happen often.
Time passed quickly as lunchtime came up. I went to the hall and picked a tray up to get whatever there was. The lunch lady never smiled at anyone while giving out food but I felt like an exception all the time. Now here in Japan, everybody thinks I am an angel.
Choosing an empty table, I sat down. It soon became crowded with my classmates on the table. Everybody jumbled on their lunch and crunched on my peace. Milo put his arms around my neck. “So, what are you doing this evening? I heard Danielle proposed to you last time.” He wiggled his eyebrows as I gave a faint smile while looking at my lunch.
“C’mon, Danielle proposed to you? Man, she is the dream girl.” Itadori said with a slight Japanese accent. His words finished as he got hit by Mako.
Mako rolled her eyes. “You don’t even know how many guys she has played with. Besides, Hunter gets thousands of proposals every day so it’s nothing special.”
