CHAPTER FOURTEEN: WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
🎸🤍
THE HAWKINS HIGH gym bleachers were full of students and community members. It was the championship game, and in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, everyone was gathered to watch it. The town had basically shut down so everyone could watch the game. Danny had gotten to the game early with Shayna, who had to be there early with the cheerleaders and the basketball team. Danny had greeted Lucas when he first arrived, and Lucas looked ecstatic to see him.
The crowd was full and cheering as the band played a hype-up song. Both basketball teams were warming up on the court. Danny watched Lucas on the court and noticed he looked nervous. He was only a freshman and participating in a championship game. Danny was still hoping tonight would be the night Lucas finally got off the bench.
"Everyone, now please rise for our national anthem. Singing for us tonight, we have a very special guest. All the way from Nashville, our very own... Tammy Thompson!"
Tammy Thompson used to be a student at Hawkins High before she left to pursue her dream of being a famous singer. Danny had heard of her, and as she walked out onto the court, Danny noted that she was hot. She was blonde and had a nice smile, but as she started to sing, Danny noticed that she wasn't that good. He started to wonder how she had managed to score a record deal in Nashville. Her singing was off-key and a bit pitchy.
Lucas looked over his shoulder at the stands. The only person he saw was Danny. If you had told Lucas a year ago that the only one of his friends who would show up to his basketball games would be Danny Buckley, he wouldn't have believed you. Lucas knew that part of the reason Danny was there was because of Shayna Moner. Lucas didn't mind Shayna. She was kind, funny, popular, and beautiful, but he couldn't help but be irritated with her sometimes. He always felt bad about it since she never did anything wrong, but he couldn't help but feel negatively towards her, especially when he saw her with Danny.
As the game started, Danny clapped and cheered with the rest of Hawkins. Danny wouldn't say he enjoyed basketball, but he didn't mind it. It was fast-paced and easy to follow, but he really wanted to see Lucas play. Danny went between watching the game and watching his girlfriend cheer. Occasionally, she would look over her shoulder and smile or wink at Danny, and Danny would do the same.
The game went on, and Hawkins was starting to get beaten. They kept getting knocked down by the opposing team. Danny groaned every time one of Hawkins' players got pushed or shoved. Jason had even gone as far as to yell in the opposing team's face, getting told off by the referee. Finally, one of the players on Hawkins' team got injured. Danny watched as he hobbled off the court, but he was shocked at what came after.
