CHAPTER NINETEEN:
KATE BUSH SAVES THE DAY

🎸🤍

BEFORE NANCY AND Robin met Max and the boys at the school, Nancy and Robin had gathered key information about Vecna's past. They researched together, learning that Vecna's killings dated back to the 1950s and identifying Victor Creel as the only survivor, who was currently confined at Pennhurst Mental Hospital. After assembling their notes, they agreed that their next step was to visit the hospital to question Victor, hoping to find anything that could help save Max.

As Danny, Lucas, Dustin, and Steve spent that morning in the Wheelers' basement, they read and reread the Victor Creel research Nancy and Robin had collected. In the corner, Max isolated herself, hunched over and tense, scribbling notes relentlessly, her pencil scratching out her anxiety. Danny and Lucas read an article titled "Victor Creel Claims: Ancient Demon Killed Family." The article explained that Victor Creel's entire family was killed, like Chrissy and Fred, with Victor as the only survivor. Danny, initially struggling to understand, began to grasp the details as he read.

"Okay, be honest..." Steve furrowed his brows as he finished reading another article. "You guys understand any of this?"

Lucas shook his head as he set the article he and Danny were reading, "No."

Danny shrugged, "Kinda."

   "Pretty straightforward," Dustin nodded.

"Oh, straightforward, really?" Steve scoffed.

"Well, what's confusing to you?" Dustin asked, raising his eyebrows. "So far, everyone Vecna has cursed has died, except for old Victor Creel dude that Nancy found. He's the only known survivor. If anyone knows how to beat this curse, it's him."

"That's assuming he was cursed, which we don't even know," Steve sighed. He threw the article down onto the coffee table and started to rub his temple. "How can Vecna have existed back in the fifties? It doesn't make sense."

"As far as we know, Eleven didn't create the Upside Down. She opened a gate to it," Dustin explained. Danny listened intently, curious to know all they knew about the Upside Down and its origins, since he didn't come into the picture until last summer. "The Upside Down has probably been around for thousands of years. Millions. I wouldn't be surprised if it predated the dinosaurs."

"Dinosaurs?" Steve scoffed. "What are we --"

"Okay, okay, but if a gate didn't exist in the fifties, how did Vecna get through?" Lucas asked.
