"Get back!"

Jason screamed as he swung his baseball bat into the rabbit creature's head. The creature stumbled back, but it didn't stop moving. Charlie kept Lucia behind her as she held out a Sledgehammer, ready to protect Lucia if she needed to. Lucia stood behind Charlie, fearing for her life, cowering as if she were a scared child. The rabbit creature stood, laughing maniacally as Jason kept his baseball bat steady.

"GET AWAY!" Jason yelled. Charlie held the sledgehammer close as Lucia held a rusted metal pipe. Suddenly, Charlie saw Lucia run past her, gripping the metal rod.

"LUCIA, WAIT!" Charlie screamed, but it was too late. The creature raised its arm high above its head, the knife that was in its hand shining in the dim lights. Charlie watched helplessly as Lucia looked up and saw the downward swing of the rabbit's knife towards her chest.

WELCOME TO HURRICANE, UTAH.
SOON TO BE HOME OF THE MEGA PIZZAPLEX.

Charlie smiled wryly at the sign and kept driving. The world didn't look any different from one side of the sign to the other, but everything still felt odd to her. John was sitting next to her in the car, smiling gently. He was wearing a light-green, button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the collar open, and a brown long sleeve jacket with gray jeans. He had fair skin that had light wrinkles, green eyes, and brown hair that was greying at the sides. Neither her, nor John recognized anything at first. Then again, neither of them really expected to, not this far at the edge of town where it was all highway and empty space. Charlie wondered what the others would look like, who they were now, and she knew John did too. Charlie hadn't seen any of them since her and John had gotten married, and as time passed, they had grown apart, the letters had grown fewer and further between. But this time, the conversations leading up to this trip hadn't been perfunctory, or full of awkward pauses. Instead, they were full of joy, excitement, cheer, and even happiness. Charlie repeated their names as though to reassure herself that she still remembered them: Carlton, Jason, Jessica, Lamar, and Marla. It had been a while since all of them had been together, mainly since the wedding, but Charlie knew things would still be different. John and Charlie passed a nearby diner, "Baby's Diner" It seemed to be a new local restaurant in Hurricane. Charlie shivered and turned down the air-conditioning, even though she knew it was not the cold. John noticed this and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"It's ok, Charlie," John assured her. "It's over now." Charlie smiled as she glanced over at John, still focusing on the road.

"I know, dear," Charlie said with a smile. "It's just hard to think about what happened." John let out a sigh.

"It is for me too." John thought, thinking back.

He had come into the room cautiously, afraid to wake her up. The room was dark except for the light filtering in through the small dirty window, and she peered at him for a moment as if she could not see him.

"John?" she whispered at last.
"Yeah," John said. "Did I wake you up?" She was so quiet for a time that he thought she was asleep.

Then she murmured, "You said you loved me."

The memory turned bitter there, and it had been nagging at him ever since—since everything ended. You said you loved me, she said, and he had babbled nonsense in response. He stood in the gravel parking lot for a moment, feeling woefully unprepared. He tapped his hand nervously on the metal fence post, then took a deep breath and went through the gate. Slowly, he followed the path he had once watched Charlie take, hindered a little by the brace on his ankle. Most of the cemetery was as green and well-kept as any park, but this corner was all scrubby grass and dirt. Two, small, plain tombstones sat together just beside the fence, a telephone pole rising behind them like a sheltering tree. John took a step toward them, then stopped with the sudden feeling that he was being watched.
