"Mom, everyone has been there but me," I whined as I kicked my legs.
"For the last time, Mackenzie, you are not going halfway across the world to see some dinosaurs," She sighed as she continued to stir the dinner on the stove. "There's a reason why we have the internet. Go on google images and look at a t-rex or something."
"You never let me have any fun," I groaned and laid back against the island. "Why can't you just be like my friend's parents and buy me a plane ticket?"
"Because I'm not crazy," My mom laughed. "Besides, you're only fifteen years old and the only way you're going over there is with me, and I don't have an interest in seeing them."
"I hate it here," I muttered. "There's never anything to do, it's always cold, you never let me out of the apartment. You might as well put me on a leash!"
"Mackenzie Jade Brenner," She looked at me with a surprised expression and I rolled my eyes dramatically. "First of all young lady, you do not talk to me like that. Second of all, you live in the heart of New York City, there's always something to do! And you never give me a reason to let you out, all you do is act like I'm your slave!"
"I'd rather die than be stuck in here," I snapped and she was quiet.
I sat up and hopped off of the counter, stomping my way all the way to the room.

"Guess where I just got tickets to?" Lindsey bragged, holding up two tickets.
"Where?" My voice was nothing but bored. I was staring at my friend's face on my macbook screen.
"Paris," She grinned and if I could punch her through the laptop I would. "The other ticket is for this fashion show I'm going to attend, you know, since my mom's a designer and everything."
"Lucky you," I said, faking my happiness. "While you're flying off to paradise I'll be stuck here with my mom."
"Didn't you tell everyone that you'd be going to Jurassic World?" Lindsey asked, putting her tickets somewhere out of the camera.
Summer break started less than five days ago and I went to New York's Theatre school, aka a private place where you had to pay money to attend. While everyone's rich parents promised plane tickets to travel around the world, my mom offered me a summer job at her dress boutique. The only way to save my reputation was to lie about going to the new big thing, and that just so happened to be a huge amusement park with dinosaurs and rides. It was like the next Disney but with more wow. Once I told everyone I'd be there, they all made me promise to post pictures on Instagram and to bring back something. It certainly saved my ass from being a loser, but I didn't exactly know how to get there. I completely forgot about my whole lie until now.
"Well that's just one thing," I shrugged my shoulders carelessly and she nodded. "My moms holding onto the tickets until I get my new clothes shipped in. You know, because it's weird to wear last season stuff."
"I totally understand," Lindsey put her hand over her heart. "I'd hate to see my best friend struggling like that. What'd you order?"
"I decided to stay low key and far from the brand name things," I smiled and Lindsey smiled back. "So I went with Hollister and American Apparel."
"I love AA," Lindsey gushed. She was eating my lies right up. "You have to show me your haul as soon as you get them, Kenzie, please? I'm begging."
"Of course," I nodded and she squealed.
Thank God that I was one of the best actresses in my grade.

A week passed of me whining and ignoring my mom. She didn't bring up Jurassic World at all. The only thing that I've been hearing about was the clothes that I ordered, which I made her put on express shipping. It was going to be here sometime in the next two days.
"Mackenzie can I talk to you for a minute?" I heard my mom call from the living room.
I sat up on my bed and glanced at my reflection. My hair was a mess, but everything else was fine. I slipped my house slippers on and walked out of my room.
"Yes?" I made sure I sounded extra bored so she knew that I was still upset. I turned the hallway corner and saw my mom sitting at the dining room table. She was holding an envelope and looking at me with anticipation.
"Have a seat, please," My mom said. I walked over to the seat in front of her and raised an eyebrow. "I have a proposal."
"Okay," I nodded. "Continue."
"I know how much you want to go to Jurassic World," She started and I was suddenly interested. "And I know you're a bit mad that I said no, but I have a solution that will help both of us."
"Spit it out, mom," I urged her.
"In this envelope I have five things," She started off. I looked at the small paper in her hands. "A plane ticket to Costa Rica and back, a ferry ticket to get on the boat to Isla Nublar, your hotel reservations, credit card, and a VIP pass to Jurassic World. These things are yours on one condition."
I smiled widely and went to grab the envelope but she moved it out of my reach. I raised an eyebrow, "What do I have to do?"
"You spend a week there, no questions asked," My mom shrugged. It sounded pretty easy. "But, as soon as you step foot back in New York, you're spending the rest of the summer helping me at the boutique."
"The rest of the summer?" I whined.
"You'll get breaks," She said. "Is it a deal or not? Because I already convinced your father to help pay these off."
"Deal."
