nine.

Their idea of "safety" was some raptor cage.

Zach, Gray, and Owen went to go look at some of them while I opted to stick with Claire. I had no idea why I would want to even look at something that could potentially kill me, but, of course, the boys leapt at the offer.

"How'd you meet Zach and Gray?" Claire asked.

I was sitting beside her in some large truck.

"I met them while I was on my way to the park," I looked out the side window and glanced all around. "What're we doing here?"

"Waiting for their signal," Claire replied. She was tapping away at some tablet thing and I watched. "Are you and Zach hitting it off okay?"

"Um," I trailed off as I continued to look outside. I was really just trying to avoid her gaze. "Like, friend-wise?"

"No, I mean dating wise," Claire laughed lightly and I almost wanted to gag.

"I mean, he's cute, I'll give him that," I muttered. And he was a douchebag. "Why do you ask?"

"Gray might've told me something," Claire teased.

I looked back at her and saw that she continued back to her tablet.

"Did he mention that Zach is dating a girl, too?" I rolled my eyes.

"Sort of," Claire shrugged.

Before we could say anything else, Owen knocked on the window. Claire rolled it down and he cleared his throat.

"Can we talk outside?" He asked her. He glanced at me. "Just you?"

"Sure," Claire nodded and put the tablet on the dashboard. "Mackenzie, you'll be fine in here, right?"

"Yeah," I nodded. "What's the worst that could happen to me?"

She smiled sympathetically at me and stepped out. They closed the door before walking a few feet away.

Silence surrounded me. I bit my inner cheek and tapped on the arm rest as I waited. Minutes passed and I was still alone.

It was crazy how a day ago I was excited to be here. Hell, I even bragged to everyone about it. The idea of being surrounded by dinosaurs was fun and I didn't even consider being chased by one.

What was that thing, anyway? It wasn't a tyrannosaurus. It had to be some kind of mixed breed. All I knew about it was that it could've killed me if it wasn't for Zach.

And what was with Zach? Did he hate me or not? What did Gray say about us?

My thoughts were cut short when I heard the car door being opened.

"Hey," Zach muttered. He got in beside me and I didn't say anything. "Everything okay?"

"Sure," I put my hands in my lap and looked down at them.

We were quiet again.

"Listen," Zach huffed. I looked over at him and saw an expression on his face. Worry, maybe? "I'm sorry about how I've been to you."

"It's fine," I said.

"No, it's not," He rolled his eyes. "I already talked to Gray about it. I noticed that if we want to make it out of here, we have to work together."

"What can I do?" I asked. "I can't even run."

"I just mean that we need to get along," Zach continued. "I'm not expecting you to be a track star. I just think that maybe you should be nicer and more cooperative."

"Okay," I said.

"What do you mean you- wait," He furrowed his brows together. "Did you just say 'okay'?"

"Yeah," I shrugged. "Why?"

"I don't know," Zach was still looking at me as if I was some mystery. "Gray and I made up this whole speech together if you didn't agree."

"Well why wouldn't I agree?" I asked. "You're right."

"Um, okay," He nodded.

There was more silence and I wanted to keep talking, but there really wasn't anything to talk about. We were both close to death. I didn't think it'd be smart to bring it up again.

Claire opened the door and cleared her throat.

"Okay, lovebirds, I need you guys in the back with Gray," She clapped her hands together. "We're on the move."
