We had been walking down the road for ten minutes. I was getting worried.
"MARLEY?" I called out.
"Shhh," Benny hushed me. "You never know what could be out here. I want to find them too, but if we're put in danger, how will they be found?"
"I guess you're right. Let's just keep looking," I said.
We kept walking and then Benny had an idea.
"We could go to the park!" Benny suggested. "Rory is a childish person, so it seems possible that they would be there."
"Yeah! I don't know where the park is. You know, right?" I asked.
"Definitely. I'll get us there," he said.
We eventually made it to the park, and Benny took me to a bush. He hid behind it, so I got down with him.
"What are you doing?" I whispered.
"I'm hiding. If something has them, we don't want it to know we're here," he said.
"So how will we find them if we can't move?" I asked.
"We will move, just really quietly," he said. "Here, follow me," he started to lead the way.
We kept going around the park and we heard some voices. We hid behind another bush and listened. Benny slowly stuck his head up above the bush, so I did, too. We were about five feet away from a bench, and sitting on that bench were two people. On the corner of the park, which was close to where we were, there was a street light. The light was bright enough to where I could see a blonde head and a brunette head. I got back down in the bush and motioned Benny to come back. I had to talk to him.
"That's them, right?" I wanted to make sure.
"Yeah, that's them. Listen for their voices," he said.
I peeped out from the bush again to listen.
"It's too bad that you have to leave so soon," a boy said. That sounded like Rory.
"Yeah. I really wish I could stay, but I have to go home. I'll miss you," a girl said.
I know Marley's voice, and that is definitely her, but it just seems more and more like she likes Rory. I think she does, but why Rory? He's a vampire. She can't date him. He's never getting any older. He can't grow old with her. If she wants to be with him, she'll want to become a vampire, and I am not letting Rory bite her. My best friend has got to be smarter than that. I would hope so. But why would she go out with Rory, and so late at night? Why would she ignore my texts? Why would she say she's going to miss him? I want to help get her out of this, but I don't know how to.
I listened to some more of the conversation. I know it's eavesdropping, but she's my best friend, and I have to make sure she's okay. I have to protect her.
"I'm going to miss you, too, a lot," Rory said.
"I really wish I could see you more," Marley replied. "I know everyone thinks your dumb, and I know you live so far away, and I do also know that you're a vampire, but I see a lot in you. You're a really nice guy and I wish I could get to know you better."
I was shocked. I pulled Benny down back behind the bush.
"Did you hear that?" I wanted to yell but I had to be quiet.
"Yeah. She likes him? Wow," Benny was surprised, too.
"I don't know what to do," I said.
"Think of it later. Right now, we need to be quiet," he said and we came back to listen.
