Hey. My name's Vinnie Robyns, I'm 17 years old and a senior at Freeland High School. My grades are perfect, but me? Not so much. I have vitiligo so I have a bunch of light spots all over my body. There's only one on my face, but it's huge and over my right eye. Ever since I started school, I got bullied for it. Kids and teens are mean.
"I'm leaving, Ma." I call up the steps.
"Okay! Have a good day, Nilla!"
I roll my eyes as I walk out of the front door. Nilla's the nickname my family gave me because I have "vaNILLA" spots all over. Not so much on my hands and arms, but on my abdomen and legs.
I peer over at my new neighbor's house. They have a lot of boxes outside. I guess they don't know when trash gets picked up.
I walk up to the stop sign and as I stop, the bus pulls up. I throw my hands into my pockets to contain the shakiness of them and people start laughing at me immediately.
"Sup, Spot. Still didn't get that nasty shit fixed, huh?" Neil laughs as I walk by.
I sit in the sit all the way at the back, "nope: same way you didn't get that chipped front tooth fixed."
"Bitch."
☔︎︎
We pull up to school and I wait for everyone to get off before I get out of my seat. As I get to the front, my bus driver says,
"Your spots are beautiful, Vinnie. I really mean it."
"Don't lie for the sake of my feelings. It just makes me feel shittier. Thanks, anyway."
"Yo, Vinnie!" I hear.
I turn around and see my only friends, Zain and Cat, rushing to catch up to me.
"Why're you screaming?" I scoff at Zain.
He slings his arm around my neck, "so you could hear me, duh. How's it going?"
"Same as always. Neil's always a joy."
"He's still messing with you? He's been doing this shit since middle school, dude." Cat says.
"Don't you two think I know that? And it's not like he's the only one, either. Everyone thinks my vitiligo is an eye sore, and I actually agree. That's why I don't get as upset anymore when they say something about it."
We walk through the school doors, "they're not an eye sore. They're cool as hell actually."
"You know I hate when you say that, Zain, so just stop. You two getting breakfast?"
"Mm, don't know. Let's see if they have those granola bars we like."
"Let's? No, you two go. If I go in there, everyone's going to be pissed."
People don't like to see me while they eat. It's understandable.
"Fuck what they think. You're beautiful, Vinnie, all of them are just assholes."
"Zain, just go. I'll wait here."
He stares at me a bit longer then walks inside with Cat. I stand outside the cafeteria, against the wall, and look at my phone while waiting.
A shadow casts over me, "damn, you got breakfast that fa-"
I look up and it's a completely unknown guy standing in front of me. He's tall (6'2, maybe 3'). His hair is medium length and black, but he has it in a bun with a few strays draping over his forehead. His eyes are a dark hazel green and his lips are pink. He has a small mole under his right eye. He's wearing a grey Nike sweatsuit with green and white air force ones. He's cute.
