*Chapter 7*
*Matthew*
A knock at the door had me coming out of my office to investigate. Mandy had gone out to run errands, and I knew she would not return for a few hours. When I opened the door, I was stunned to see who was on the other side of it. For a second, I stood staring, emotions flooding my body like a damn that had broken after years of holding firm.
"Hello, Matthew." She said, using my name, fire shooting through my body like hot lava.
"Aren't you going to invite me in?" Alli requested.
I knew that I shouldn't. Being alone with Alli like this was dangerous, but I moved aside to let her in.
Alli was the last person I expected to see on my doorstep. The last time I had seen her, things hadn't ended well between us. I only wished she could understand that everything I did was for her.
Seeing the beautiful diamond ring on her finger made me feel sick, and I could only imagine how she had felt when she saw the ring on my finger the day we met. Sadness washed over me, hating how things had worked out for us.
When I noticed her pregnant belly, I closed my eyes to calm the wolf inside me. The baby she was carrying was not ours, making my wolf crazy.
I bawled my hands into fists and hoped I didn't lose it. I was taking deep breaths to calm myself.
"Are you ok?" Alli said, closing the space between us, her hand gripping my arm.
"Please don't touch me," I said, moving away from her quickly.
The touch of my mate had done its job, and she had calmed my wolf in these brief seconds.
"I'm sorry," she said, her eyes meeting mine.
I closed my eyes, not able to take the look of hurt that flashed in her eyes at my words.
"I came to ensure you keep your word to me." She said, turning her back to me.
"I gave you my word, Alli, and I have kept it despite it killing me not to see you. Every day without you in torture," I said, the words falling from my lips.
She turned to look at me, her beautiful hazel eyes filling with tears.
Why did she always have to look so dam beautiful? She was glowing. It crushed me inside to know that her baby was not mine when it should have been.
"I will try my best to keep that promise to you," I said, staring at her growing belly.
"I know you are angry with me, Alli, and you have every right to be. I turned your life upside down, but I need you to know I did it so you can be happy. It's challenging to see you with someone else, and I can only imagine it's the same for you when you see Mandy and me together."
"You could have rejected me, and this wouldn't be as painful to either of us." She said, her eyes shining with tears.
"It isn't that easy, Alli. What I feel for you is out of my control. Having you here now is incredibly difficult for me. I made a mistake by not waiting for you, but it's a mistake I can never take back. True mates are rare, and I never imagined I would find mine. I will do my best to keep my word, but please do not provoke my jealousy on purpose," I said because she was defiant and didn't understand that my wolf was dangerous to Nick.
"I won't hide my love for my husband because it bothers you. I love him, and you'll have to deal with it!" She said hands balled at her side.
She refused to make this easy. Her Alpha genes were coming out to challenge me.
