Chapter 10

*Mandy*

Five years earlier...

"Andrew, I don't want to do this! Please, let me stay here with Mom." I pleaded.

"You have no choice." He said, dragging me by my hair.

"How do you expect me to do what you want?" I said, tears running down my face.

"You make sure you work yourself into his life and find his weakness, his mate. Find out who his mate is!" He growled.

"I can't do this," I pleaded.

"You do it, or I'll kill your good for nothing, mother." He spat at me, anger in his eyes.

"How can you be so heartless? She raised you and loved you as her own. She stood up for you against your evil father!" I yelled, angry.

"Watch how you talk to me, sister." He said, slapping me hard across my face.

I knew that was going to leave a bruise; I could taste the blood in my mouth already.

It was hopeless; to him, my mother and I were nothing but worthless humans. His father hated that my mother was his mate. He had loved her and hated her at the same time. He had swept her off her feet and treated her like a princess. He had assured her that he would love me like a daughter. He told my mother about his son, who was only a year older than me, and how his mother had died soon after he was born. My mother fell hook, line, and sinker.

It was when we moved here that she learned what he was.

When he first shifted, my mother was terrified, not understanding what a shifter or mate was. He had not explained much to her, only that she belonged to him now.

When my mother tried to leave, he became outraged. He had beaten her black and blue, almost killing her. When I had tried to intervene, he had taken to beating me too. It took us months to heal from all the bones he had broken.

I thought about what would happen to my mother if I didn't do what he was asking me to do, and it brought tears to my eyes. When that Alpha had killed my stepfather, it had been the best day of our lives. We thought that we were finally free, but our hopes died quickly.

Andrew refused to let us leave. We were his only family, he had claimed. He had never mistreated my mother. I think he had affection for her, but I knew he was as ruthless as his father and would not hesitate to do what he had to to get what he wanted. He wanted this Alpha to suffer for killing his father.

"If I do this, will you let me and my mother go?" I asked, hopeful.

"Yes! If you can give me his mate's name, I will free you and your mother." He said with a frown.

"Fine. I'll do it. Where can I find him, and what's his name?" I asked, getting up from the floor.

"He's going to Crest Wood High, where he's a senior. Since you're a year older and have finished high school, I'll have to get you a fake birth certificate to get you back into school.

"His name is Matthew Eastman." He growled.

"Memorize the name of your enemy and everything about him," Andrew said, handing me a file filled with information on Matthew.

When my mother saw my face all bruised, she cried and begged me not to do it, but I knew that this was our only way to be free.

"I have to do it. Andrew said he would let us go if I did this," I said, laying in her lap.
