The rest of the ride back to the house was grim and uneventful, the mood in the car darkening as soon as those words left my mouth.

No one questioned me about what I had said, and I had a feeling that most, if not all of them, felt the way that I did.

And that included Zanaya, who hadn't had the chance to be "inducted" into our small group just yet.

We were running out of time to subdue Garth and find the others...

Daniel sighed and shook his head before he grimaced and cleared his throat. "Damn," he said before he cleared his throat again, and I bit back a small snort before I slowly nodded. "So, I guess that means we can't fail."

"Nope," I said and shook my head before I cleared my throat, growing serious while I shifted in my seat. "It will be tough, but I think we will be able to manage." I paused and cocked my head, pursing my lips into a thin line. "Ya, we will be able to manage."

"Are you sure?" Zanaya asked, her voice barely above a whisper, and I looked at her. She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat, her cheeks turning red, and she looked away from me. "What if we don't? What i-"

"The "what ifs" are going to get us killed, Zanaya," I said, interrupting her. I winked with a small smile before I looked forward and cleared my throat, growing serious. "It poisons the mind and makes you feel like you are not good enough and afraid of anything and everything." I winked and flashed her a small smirk before I sighed and shook my head, again growing serious. "It's going to be tough to stop them, but you have to stop them. Ok?"

Zanaya hesitated before she slowly nodded. She furrowed her brows and pressed her lips into a thin line, and I could tell that she wondered if I was saying this because I had gone through it and was going through it at this very moment.

"Are you still feeling like that, Eira?" Daniel asked, voicing their concerns out loud. He set his jaw and looked through the mirror at me, and I shrugged and grimaced.

"If I am or not is not important at the moment, Daniel," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat some more. "Just know that I am still here and am still fighting as much as I can even if I don't agree with some things." I glanced at David when I said that, and David grabbed the steering wheel tighter and set his jaw.

"Telling you to let us know where you are going is not that difficult, Eira," David said, and I grinned amused. "We are here to protect you even if you do not agree with it."

I shrugged. "My uncle would have gotten to Daniel if I had told you where I was going, and Zanaya could have lost her leg or her life if I had waited any longer as well, David." I glanced at Zanaya when I said that before I looked at the rearview mirror again.

"I don't think that would have been the case," David said and shook his head. "Your uncle isn't that stupid. He could have used her, especially since she is myth."

"I don't think that they would use anyone besides death, who hasn't been called yet," Daniel said, and I hesitated before I nodded in agreement. "That is the person that we have to watch out for and be worried about." He set his jaw, and I knew that he narrowed his eyes because he didn't like the death person, even though he had never met them, and that was something that I didn't agree with.

"I wouldn't be so sure..." I said and shook my head, furrowing my brows. I bit the inside of my lip and cleared my throat, shifting ever so slightly. "I think that there is a chance the person that controls death will be willing to help us in our quest just as much as we will be helping them with theirs."

"What do you mean?" Daniel asked and raised an eyebrow in question. "What quest would the death person have that we can't do already without them?"

"Well, we can't control death or do deathly things," I said sarcastically. "We can't call forth the dead to protect us, use creatures of the night to our advantage, have control over Brïthirs if we ever come across them again, and so forth."

"Are you sure that Zanaya can't have any control over them?" Daniel asked and raised an eyebrow in question. "They are some type of mythical creature, so she could command them to stop and not attack us."

I glanced at Zanaya's face from the corner of my eye and saw that her face was pale before I looked toward Daniel again. "I don't think so," I said and shook my head when she didn't say a word. "I think only the Death Holder or Death God can do something with them, especially since they aren't really mythical creatures but come from the Dark Lands."

Daniel scoffed and rolled his eyes, scowling. "Oh, so like she can control minotaurs, but she can't control them? That is s-"

"For one, she doesn't know what she can control or not because she doesn't have her stone," I said, interrupting him. "Two, we don't know what she can control or not, yet. Again, she doesn't have her stone or dagger, yet, and she won't have her gem until we see Katie."

Daniel narrowed his eyes and scowled. He didn't say a word while he stared at me through the rearview mirror, and I stared at him with a blank look on my face, not saying another word.

"We will be able to figure that out later," David said before he cleared his throat and pressed his lips into a thin line. "Now, cool it, you two. There is no reason to have another argument. However, Daniel, Eira is right, Zanaya will not be able to control Brïthirs. They aren't mythological creatures like Sirens or Minotaurs or something like that. They are animals like cats and dogs, and Zanaya can't control them."

Daniel bit back a small scoff and rolled his eyes, scowling. He folded his arms across his chest but didn't say another word, and I could tell that he didn't believe us and wanted to see if Zanaya could do it.

"Well, we'll be able to figure that out later," I said, noticing that we were on the street that would get us to our house and pursed my lips in annoyance. "We're about three minutes away from the house and then we can grab the box, go in, and see what Katie has to say."

Zanaya cleared her throat and shifted in her seat, and we looked at her before David and Daniel turned their attention back to the road. "Will she know what I can control or not?" Zanaya asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Or do you think it will be something I have to figure out along the way?"

"I think it is something where we will have to figure out, Zanaya," I said and gave her a pointed look, and Zanaya looked away from me with her cheeks turning red. "You aren't going to be alone in doing this. Ok? I'll be here to help you in any way that I can. I promise."

Zanaya hesitated before she slowly nodded, and she breathed a small sigh of relief. "Ok," she said, her voice barely above a whisper before she cleared her throat and shifted in her seat. "Thank you. I do appreciate it; I really do."

"Of course," I said and nodded, smiling. I patted her hand before I cleared my throat and placed my hands in my lap, growing serious. "That is what we are here for. I promise."

And with that, we drove the rest of the way home in silence, each one of us lost in our own thoughts and wondering what the future would hold for us.
