"Eira?" Zanaya whispered when she entered the Between. Fear filled her voice, and it shook from the fear that I had left her alone. "Where are you? I can't see."
"I am here," I soothed. I took my stone from under my shirt and held it, illuminating us in a soft blue glow. I smiled and held out my hand for her to take. "Here, take my hand. I have to put this up because of the W's."
"Are they here?" Zanaya asked. Fear filled her voice, and I had a feeling that she wanted to get out of this place as soon as she could. "Those things?"
I shrugged. "There have been sightings of them," I replied. "However, I have not seen them myself, so I don't know if they are rumors or not, but I don't want to find out."
Zanaya hesitated but nodded. She grabbed my hand, and I stuffed the necklace back under my shirt before I started to walk in the direction I knew we had to go. "How do you know where we are going?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Aren't you afraid that we'll get lost?"
I furrow my brows while I tried to find a way to explain how I knew which way we needed to go. However, no matter how hard I try, I wasn't able to. "It's... a feeling," I said, slowly. "It's something that I can't describe, unfortunately."
"Ok..?"
I licked my lips and cleared my throat when I furrow my brows further. "You know how I told you about the strings connecting you to Caden?"
"Yes..?"
"It's like that. It feels like there is a string attaching me to the area where we need to go. There... isn't any way for me to mess with it or someone else. I always know where the exit is that will lead us close to the people that are in our group."
Zanaya stayed silent, and I had a feeling that she nodded. "Who is in our group?" she asked. "Like what are their names, and..." she trailed off. However, she didn't need to finish her sentence because I knew what she wanted to ask.
'Are any of them like us?'
"Two of them are like us," I confirmed. "One controls life and the other controls fire. The other two are sort of our teachers, but..." I shrugged. "One knows life, and the other knows ice."
"So they won't be able to help me with my powers?" Zanaya asked, sounding downtrodden. She sighed sadly, and I could tell that she was afraid of not being able to learn her powers and how to control them before they controlled her.
"They might not be able, just I think I can," I said. I looked to the left, sensing something watching us, and became tense and stopped, making sure that Zanaya didn't run into me. No warning bells filled my mind, so I took a deep breath and relaxed before I started to walk again.
"Eira?" Zanaya asked, walking again with me. Nervousness filled her voice, and she pushed a little closer to me. Her whole body was tense, and I knew that she would run away if I hadn't had her hand in mine. "Why did you stop?"
"I felt something watching us," I said. I shrugged, not worried about what was watching because I had a feeling I knew who it was. "It's nothing bad. I would've told you to run if it was."
Zanaya stayed silent for a bit, and I could feel her becoming tenser with each passing second. She looked around, trying to see what was hiding in the fog. However, she couldn't because it seemed like it had gotten thicker by the minute. "Do you know if it was dangerous or not?"
"It's not," I replied. "As I said, I would have told you to run if it was."
She paused. "Would you have been able to find me if you did?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I would have," I confirmed, even though I had no idea if I would have been able to or not. I felt something rub against me and rolled my eyes.
Zanaya felt the thing rub up against her, and she gasped while she jumped in fright. Her hand gripped tighter around mine, and a small squeal escaped her lips while she tried not to scream.
"Can you make it lighter, Arzon?" I asked, letting him hear the dissatisfaction in my voice. "And did you have to scare her like that when you knew that she was new to all of this?" I stopped and pulled the other female to a stop as well.
Arzon chuckled, and it grew lighter so that we could see where we were going. He sat down in front of us, amusement filling his brown eyes.
Zanaya's grip on my hand became tighter, and she hid behind me. Her whole body was tense, and she started to shake while fear came off her in waves.
Arzon bowed his head. "I am not going to harm you, Holder," he said, soothingly. "I am Arzon. It is finally nice to meet the Myth Holder. We have waited a long time for the next one."
"Not that long," I reminded him, and he chuckled and nodded. "It took longer to find Daniel than her."
"I know," he replied. He looked at Zanaya behind me and smiled, his nose wrinkling. "I am here to bring you back to where you need to go safely."
I rolled my eyes at the lion. "Meaning, he wants to meet the next Holder before anyone else," I said. I scored teasingly, and Arzon looked at me, amused. "I was able to take her back safely, and you know it."
Arzon chuckled and nodded. "I do," he confirmed. He stood and gestured for us to follow him toward the exit that we had to take. "But you are right. It is an honor and a gift to meet the new Holder before they get their stones and meet Katie."
I started to walk again with him by my side and glanced at him from the corner of my eye. "What would you do if we didn't need to go into the Between to get to where we had to go?" I asked, cocking my head while I stared at him curiously.
Arzon raised an eyebrow and glanced at me before he looked forward. "Then I guess I'll come to find you," he said, and I couldn't help but snort. He smiled and flicked his tail while we walked. "Katie doesn't need to find out about them first."
"You'll scare the Huyters if you do," I worked. I kept Zanaya's hand in mine, knowing full well that she was still uncomfortable about the lion. "I am sure that someone would call the zoo and have them bring you there."
Arzon nodded. "I am aware," he confirmed. He smirked, and a twinkle appeared in his eyes and was filled with mischief. "But, I can create portals back into the Between if need be."
I nodded, feeling relieved. I had no idea what I would do if he got captured, and I was sure that I would be in prison because I "stole" an animal from the zoo or wherever he was placed because he was not going to stay there.
"Another thing is that to Huyters, I would look like a normal house cat," Arzon said, breaking me from my thoughts. "Only those from the different worlds would know that I am not a normal house cat." He gave me a sidelong glance, and I had a feeling that he knew what I was thinking. "That way, you won't have to break me out of jail if I decide to appear." He winked.
I shook my head and smiled, feeling amused and grateful. I had no idea when Arzon would appear as a "house cat" around me, and I prayed that it wouldn't happen. I didn't need someone to think that he belonged in a zoo because he was my eyes.
He was my eyes in the Between when I wasn't able to come, and I needed him here to make sure that I was informed about the happenings of this place while I trained the other Holders.
