THE COPS HAD TAKEN THE KIDS BACK TO THE WHEELER HOUSE WHERE ALL THEIR PARENTS WERE WAITING. The kids were seated on the couch with the adults surrounding them and interrogating them. "What exactly were you all doing at the lake?" Chief Powell asked.

They eyed each other, trying to think of an excuse but the silence was a little too long so Max said the first thing that came to her brain, "we were... We were just going for a walk."

"A walk? At 9:00 p.m.?" Officer Callahan questioned, not believing their story.

"To the lake. We were gonna take a little swim. Little night swim," Dustin replied in a high pitched voice. Cindy furrowed her eyebrows at Dustin, interested by the choice of voice he went for.

"Dusty. Someone was just murdered there," Claudia mentioned.

He laughed, "yeah, we... we didn't realise that until we got there."

"That's why we didn't swim," Lucas interjected.

"And Nancy, was she with you at this night swim?" Karen asked, urgently.

"No," Max answered.

"Yes," Dustin said at the same time, the two looked at each other, thinking of the next thing they'd say to cover that up.

"We're not sure," Lucas said for them.

"She was there. Then she left. It's all a little confusing."

"What about Steve? Was he there?" Cindy's mom asked, she looked up at her mom, before conversing silently with the others.

"No. You kidding? You know Steve, as if," she chuckled nervously. Dustin nodded to back her up.

"That's when you guys came," Lucas added.

"Right. Then they dared me to say what I said about the killer," they laughed awkwardly.

"You're lucky you didn't get shot," Mr. Wheeler added and the kids stopped laughing and looked over at the buzzkill that's Mike's father.

"Have you had any contact with Eddie?" Chief Powell asked.

"That psycho... freak killer? God, no," Dustin responded.

"No. We haven't heard from him," Max said in return.

"We barely know the guy," Lucas chuckled.

"Oh, that's a bunch of bull," Erica interjected, stepping forward.

Cindy's smile immediately fell as she realised Erica would blow their cover, she groaned and ran her hand down her face.

"Erica!" Lucas' parents scold her.

"I mean, you realize they're lying. The whole couch is on fire," she adds.

"Erica," they warn her.

"Just the facts," she shrugs. Cindy glared at the girl, she really hated children.

"Are you lying to these policemen, Dusty?" Claudia questioned, sounding upset he would do that.

"No," Dustin exclaimed.

"Lying to cops is a crime, son." Lucas' father warned.

"I'm not lying," Lucas told him.

"The fire is consuming us," Erica added.

"Erica, I swear to god," Cindy started, ready to throw hands.

"Threaten them with a little jail time. Maybe that'll loosen their lips," Mr. Wheeler suggested.

The kids looked over at the man, Cindy did not want to do that, she glanced at her mother for help, she just seemed annoyed by the situation.

"You wanna send our kids to jail?" Lucas' mom asked.
