Under the dim glow of flickering streetlights, Murtasim Khan's car screeched to a halt in front of the hospital. The imposing building that was surrounded by bustling city life, seemed to absorb the weight of the impending tragedy. Its walls stood firm, a silent witness to the pain and suffering that had passed through its corridors.
The guard came forward swiftly opening the car door as Naurez and Anwar Khan stepped forward from where they were standing at the hospital entrance.
Murtasim carefully gathered Meerab in his arms covering her properly with his shawl trying to shield her from the prying eyes of the night as Anwar Khan took hold of the door helping him out of the car.
The sight of his daughter covered in blood had sent a chill down his spine. He stood frozen for a second and moved when he felt Naurez's hand on his shoulder. A tear slipped down his eye. How much more was his little girl going to suffer in life?
The medical staff had already been alerted about their arrival so they were waiting with a mixture of trepidation and preparedness. The protocol for handling such high-stakes situations hung heavily in the air, and the staff had been on edge since the Khan family's arrival an hour ago.
As Murtasim emerged from the car, cradling Meerab in his arms, the hospital staff, donned their white coats, moved forward to guide him. However, Murtasim who was already consumed by worry and urgency, seemed oblivious to their attempts to motion him towards the waiting stretcher.
"Sir, please lay her on the stretcher," one of the nurses implored, trying to help him but he continued walking, his eyes darting around the chaotic scene. His heavy voice resonated through the corridor, as he nearly shouted "Kis taraf jana hai?".
It was a desperate plea for direction in the labyrinth of the hospital's emergency area.
The staff was already intimated by the importance of the situation and the presence of the Khan family. A male nurse stepped forward, "Is taraf le aye sir," he spoke, gently leading Murtasim toward the emergency room. The atmosphere around was enveloped with raw emotions.
The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor flickered above as Murtasim he moved towards the emergency room with Meerab cradled in his arms, his usually commanding presence diminished. The world around him seemed to blur into insignificance as his focus narrowed solely on the unconscious figure in his embrace. Her head was buried in his chest as it held a silent plea for reassurance.
Tears streamed down his face, marking a stark contrast to the man who had walked these corridors with authority over the past several weeks, assisting his wife. Now, he appeared as a broken man on the verge of emotional collapse, the weight of the situation evident in every tear that fell.
Salma Begum who was observing everything from behind, felt her heart shatter for her son and daughter-in-law. Despite her efforts to maintain composure, the sight of Meerab's blood-stained shirt and injured hand had caused her emotions to surge. Anila's scream had resonated in the background, echoing the collective anguish of the family.
She saw Anwar Khan pacing anxiously outside, his restlessness palpable as Murtasim disappeared through the doors of the emergency room with the doors closing behind him, creating a barrier that separated him from the family's collective anxiety.
Bakhtu had stepped inside, standing at a distance when Salma Begum addressed him.
"Ji Maa Begum, hukum kijiye," he responded respectfully.
