Safe and Sound

Chapter 4

The walk up to the stage felt like miles but it was only a few feet. With every step I took, my heart beat faster and faster until there I was at the stage. I walked up the steps and stood next to Liam. I shook hands with him and we were led into the Justice Building.

I was put into a room that was small, but big enough for about five people. That same instant, three familiar faces came through the door.

I hugged each and every one of them. I held onto April a bit longer than my parents, but she was very special to me and I would do anything for her.

"Remember to look out for yourself, but don't put your name into the drawing at all. I don't want your chance rising even more." I said, cupping her face in my hands. Her lips curved and her head shook up and down.

I looked over at my parents and they had their arms around each other's backs in a side hug. I hugged them really tight again. I looked into my mother's eyes.

"You take care of her okay?" I stared right into her blue orbs and she nodded. I looked over to my father's green eyes.

"You have to take care of everyone okay? Please do it for me and for the sake of everyone else." I stated, letting go of the hug and staring straight into his eyes. He nodded silently. They all gave me a group hug which didn't last long because they had to leave.

The next visitor was Jack. He gave me a giant hug and I hugged him back with the same amount of passion. I was happy that he wasn't picked because if he was, then the town wouldn't get as much food and I wouldn't get to see him. And that made me sound very selfish.

We pulled back, "May you have to win for me, okay? I don't want you to die." He confessed and I hugged him one more time, telling him I would try my best to stay alive. Then the unexpected happened. He leaned in and placed his soft lips onto mine. I was surprised to see that he did this.  He had so much passion in the kiss that I felt I could never match it. I couldn't help but kiss back. I know I like Liam, but I knew Jack more. Jack pulled away. "I love you, May." He said as he walks out the door. I can't believe that he feels this way. My hand made its way up to my lips feeling his taste linger on my own mouth. I could never look at him the same way. 

April. I had to win for her too. I knew that I probably had no chance of winning, but I needed to try. And I will.

I was led into a carriage that would take us to the Capitol. Liam was looking down at his shoes. It was really sad for him. I looked back out the window and there were people following us. The announcer man was sitting in between us and I guess his name was Donald. That's a very mellow name, considering he was from the Capitol.

The carriage had stopped by the train. We got out and walked over to the entrance. We went up the steps and into the lobby car. It was like a luxury, well for District 15. Everything was either purple or white. It was so beautiful.

I sat down in a purple chair that was very cushioned. Liam sat in the chair next to me and I started looking around more. The room was a lavender color and had dark purple designs. The tables were white with dark purple placemats. All the cups and plates were clear glass.

I heard a rustling sound coming from the door. My eyes shot in that direction and the door opened. In came a boy who looked about 17 or 18. He had blonde hair with blue eyes. He was strong built looking. Following him was a girl who had long brown hair braided down. She had grey eyes and fair skin. She was very pretty. They were both yelling at each other playfully.

They sat down in the chairs in front of us, separated by a table.

"Hello! I am Peeta Mellark and this is Katniss Everdeen!" The blonde said. He motioned to the dark haired girl when he said her name. She smiled. Peeta had a voice that just made you want to tell him your deepest darkest secrets.

"We will be your mentors for this year's Hunger Games. We will tell you how to survive from what we know, but also since there are more Districts now, District 12 has to mentor all of them, so we will get as much time with you as we can, but it won't be that much, so you will have a personal trainer." Katniss explained. Peeta nodded.

"First off, you might want to learn how to find shelter. Katniss would climb trees and sleep in them. I made a alliance with some Careers and then I camouflaged myself as a rock, so no one would notice me. Then Katniss found me. She got me back to normal health." The blue eyed one said, looking dreamily at Katniss. She looked at him the same way. It was obvious they were in love with each other.

"To find food, you will probably want to pick a weapon that will help kill animals. I use a bow and arrow, Peeta used a spear," the one with grey orbs said. "Water is a different subject. It depends on the arena if they have water or not. If they don't, you need sponsors. Sponsors are people outside the game that send you things you need, inside the game. We will tell you more about that later," Katniss finished. This was a lot to take in, but it was between life or death, so I had to listen carefully.

"We better go back to our rooms. Donald will show you where your rooms are." Peeta stated and as if on que, Donald came through the door. Katniss and Peeta left the way they came.

Donald waltzed over to us as stood by Liam's chair. He motioned us to stand up and so we did. We followed him into a hallway that had two doors where I'm guessing where our rooms were. Liam and I went in opposite directions.

My room was amazing. It had a Queen sized bed with purple sheets and the room had the same cole schemes as the lobby room. It had a giant wardrobe and a whole other separate dresser. I saw a door that led somewhere else. I opened the door and it was a bathroom. It very big. It had a clear shower that had buttons to change the settings from what I'm guessing. It was the same colors as the room. It had one big sink set with probably more than an average person needs.

I walked back into the room. I sat on the edge of the giant bed. I let out a exasperated sigh. I stood up and walked over to my wardrobe. I opened it up and there was so many clothes in there, you wouldn't believe. I sauntered to my dresser. It had about five drawers of even more clothes.

I picked out a nightgown to wear for my sleep. Slowly, I took off my clothes and put on the nightgown. It was a lavender color. It was very pretty. I went into the bathroom, washed my face, brushed my teeth, and I just fell back onto my big bed. I turned over onto my back and pulled the covers over me. This day has been very stressful and tomorrow will probably be worse. And it will get even worse after that and so forth.

I started thinking about what Jack had told me. Did he really love me? I couldn't believe it. We were only friends and nothing was going to change that. I then started to think about Liam. I did like him, but I didn't need to think about that right now. I needed to think of how to survive. I should probably get some sleep. As soon as that thought was said in my mind, my eyes got droopy and I soon fell asleep.
