Sydney's Point of View
"How could you do this to our family?!"
I dropped my backpack at the bottom of the stairs and walked to the living room. There I saw mom crying and dad trying to comfort her. With frown I approached them and asked, "Guys, what's going on?" My parents weren't know for being romantic, but I have never seen mom crying this hard. Mom quickly wiped her tears away with the back of hand and dad turned to me looking serious and guilty.
"Everything's okay, sweetie. Why don't you go to school?" Mom gave me a smile trying to convince me that everything was fine, but I knew better. I looked at dad and asked, "Dad? Are you gonna tell me the truth?"
The atmosphere was thick with tension and made it hard for me to breathe. Dad stayed silent and I looked at the papers on the coffee table. I picked it up and read it.
Order of Diablo
$60,000,000.-
Transfer the money by the end of this month, Jared Sage, or your family must face the consequences.
I looked up at dad speechless. "What is the Order of Diablo?" I asked, tears threatening to run down my face. He sighed and answered, "Order of the Devil." Mom let out a loud sob and walked out of the living room.
"I owe a lot of money to them, Syd. They're one of the most powerful drug cartels in the world-"
"And what the hell were you doing with them?!" I asked angrily. $60,000,000.- was not something you can easily order from Amazon or Ebay. My family wasn't poor, but we weren't rich either. My parents were in charge of the money flow in our family. Dad ran his hands through his hair in frustration and said, "I was trying to start a company for our family, Syd. I was working with the Byers-"
"The Byers?! Dad, we've been warned not to work with them! Are you crazy?"
"I thought I was careful enough--"
"Obviously, you weren't. The Byers stabbed you in the back and now our family has to suffer?" I asked. I had never been that close to dad, and this situation wasn't helping. I scoffed and threw the papers away. I shook my head at dad and walked out of our home with my feelings scattered everywhere. As I was leaving, dad came after me. He looked at me and asked, "Wait, you know an Ivashkov at school right?"
