I was woken up by the noise. It was my little sister, yelling for breakfast.

"Go away,'' I said, still half asleep.

''Breakfast. Onee-chan, food!!'' The little girl yelled again. She just wouldn't give up.

Every morning my sister would wake me up, demanding that she wanted food. At first I thought that looking after her by myself wouldn't be that hard but a month later it had turned into a nightmare. But no matter the difficulties, I just couldn't leave her. She is my only family left.

Our mother was killed by the ghouls seven years ago. Our father became a depressed alcoholic and a year later he lost his job. At the time my sister was three and I was eight. Our father started taking drugs and they killed him. He couldn't get over our mother's death. Me and my sister were alone. I knew both my mother and father would want me to take care of her, so I did. I worked a lot so that I would be able to move to Tokyo and go to a better high-school. Eventually I did, renting a small apartment for both of us.

I looked at my phone and realized that I would be late for school if I didn't hurry.

''Crap. I have to feed the brat and then go,'' I said as I jumped out of the bed and put on a random shirt, black ripped jeans and sneakers. I took my leather jacket and went to the kitchen. Hatori was sitting on the table, waiting for food. I quickly prepared her instant noodles with pizza flavor. Her eyes were shining when she saw the food. She really liked it and I was glad about it because we couldn't really afford better food. Once in a month, I bought chocolate for both of us.

''Arigato Akari-nee-chan.'' She said with her cute voice. I attempted to smile.I was so tired. Tired of life, studying and working. I had no one. The only reason for me to keep on living was my sister who just couldn't take care of herself yet.

''Well then, I'm off. Bye bye, Hatori. Take care,'' I said as I walked out.

The sky was dark and it looked like it was going to rain. I decided to take the shorter path through a small back alleyway since I was going to be late. It was dark and looked like no one ever went there, but I wasn't afraid. I looked back to the old times, in our old house.

"How dare you not have any money?" An old man screamed at me.  He was my father, but I couldn't recognize him. He had changed so much. I looked at him in fear. It was the first time I saw him like that. He wanted money for something, having spent all of the ones he had saved.

''Why don't you bring me any money? I need the money!'' He yelled and grabbed me by the shirt, shoving me in the mirror. It broke, leaving wounds on my back and right hand. I just sat there in silence. There was nothing I could do. The man walked closer and started hitting me with all the strength he had. I was bleeding and hurt but I didn't let a single tear or scream out. My, at the time five year old sister, was hiding behind the door, scared and crying. Since that day our father has always been like that. I found out he was taking drugs and I knew that they would eventually kill him.

After all the abuse I went through nothing could scare me.

I walked in and a few minutes later I heard someone's breathing. I continued walking and saw a boy fighting the air. He had hair white as snow. He noticed me and turned his face towards me. One of his eyes was normal but the other one was red and black. A ghoul eye. My eyes widened. It was one of them. The reason for our parents' death. I hated ghouls more than anything and even though humans and ghouls lived in peace now, I still wanted to kill them all. The boy kept staring at me, one hand in a fist still in the air. I ran towards him and tried to punch him but he was too fast. I found myself hanging in the air with my head upside down.

''Let me go you filthy ghoul!'' I growled. I tried to sound scary but the fear in my voice could be sensed. The ghoul slightly smiled.

''I'll let you go because I'm not a murderer. And you're pretty cute. But if you try doing something funny, you will regret it,'' he said as he gently let me down.

"My name is Kaneki. What about you?"

"I'm Akari," I answered with no emotion. ''And now I have to go,'' I said quickly as I walked away. I could feel him staring at me, but I didn't want to turn around. He didn't want to harm me in any way.

I quietly walked into the classroom, I wasn't as late as I thought I would be. It was the first day after the summer vacation.

''You must be our transfer student. Please introduce yourself,'' the teacher said. I nodded, "My name is Akari Kita. It is nice to meet you,'' I said as I looked down. At my old school people hated me because they knew about my father and they saw the scars I had.

''Very well. You can go sit over there,'' the teacher said, pointing at a seat in front of a boy with a black hoodie, looking down. I slowly approached the desk, remembering the boy from this morning. Suddenly the boy lifted his head and looked at me with grey eyes. His hair was white as snow. I stood there frozen. He smiled at me, ''So we meet again...''
