The following day passed, and no new discoveries were made. Katumi kept quiet most of the day, not wanting Shoto to call her out for her 'attitude problem' again. He never said much, either.
Walking through the streets, Katsumi noticed that the city seemed to be gearing up for some kind of festival. She asked Shoto if he knew anything about it, and of course, he had an answer.
"It's a Spring Festival the locals put together every year. Quite a beautiful thing, if not for all the crime below the surface of it. I'm surprised you've never heard of it."
"I don't have time for a lot of vacations," she replied. She looked around the streets at the lights being strung through the cherry blossom trees and the streets being blocked off for vendors and other small events. He was right--it was very beautiful.
Perhaps other children went to these types of things when they were kids, but not Katsumi. Her family dynamic had always been a bit strange compared to other kids. She didn't like dwelling on that sort of thing, but she would always feel jealous of others and the opportunities they got that she didn't.
They took a turn into the city park, which was just as equally dressed up as the streets they'd been walking down. She supposed this would be a romantic setting for some if they were into that sort of thing. Katsumi didn't really have the time to ever be thinking about those sorts of things. She reminded herself of that when she looked down the path at their target, who was weaving through the gathering crowds. It could be easy to lose him in this setting if they weren't careful.
"Shift change in an hour, by the way," Shoto reminded her. "I've contacted a trusted agency in the area, and they've agreed to send someone out to relieve us for the night so we can get some proper rest."
Katsumi nodded and continued down the path at Shoto's side. She glanced over at him and noticed the lights from the trees swimming in his eyes and highlighting his cheekbones, and she forced herself to look away. Shoto was conventionally attractive. That she knew--there was nothing else to note except that. That was why she sometimes found herself looking at him when he wasn't paying attention. Nothing more.
When the other heroes came to relieve them of their duties, Katsumi pulled up a list of hotels in the area that had vacancies and found only one. "They must all be packed for the festival," she commented as she looked through. They headed off out of the park and to the hotel.
It wasn't shabby by any means, but it definitely wasn't state-of-the-art, either. They walked through the front door. A woman sat at the counter with a magazine in her hand and looked at them with bored eyes as they approached.
"Just the two of you?" she asked. They nodded. "How long you staying?"
"One night," Katsumi replied. She drummed her fingertips against the counter as the woman scrolled through the computer, the screen lighting up her face in the dimly lit reception area.
"Ah, right there," said the woman, clicking her mouse. "We've got one room left. It's a single bed, will that be alright?"
Shoto scoffed behind her, and she considered it for a moment before responding. "That's fine." The woman held out a key, and Katsumi took it from her.
"Fourth floor," she told them.
Katsumi headed for the stairs and Shoto trailed behind her. "Are you kidding?" he scoffed.
"It's all they have." Katsumi hit a landing on the stairs and turned to go up the next set. "What else do you propose?"
"Isn't there anywhere else?"
"Internet said this was the only place with vacancy." She looked down at the key and checked the room number before starting up the steps again.
"You can't possibly be suggesting that we share a bed, are you?"
