As we flew back home, my mind replayed the highlights of the trip—New York City's skyline, the blue carpet, and the fun moments with Walker and his family. But in the back of my mind, the tension with my mom and her abrupt call loomed large. The flight felt like a bridge between the excitement of NYC and the return to my everyday routine.
When we landed at the airport, I saw my dad waiting for us. I kept my interactions with Walker brief, wary of revealing too much to my dad. Leena introduced herself, "Hey, Mr. River! I'm Leena," she said, shaking his hand.
"Hello, Leena. Was Rory good?" he asked.
"Yes, don't worry," Leena assured with a smile.
My dad took my bag, and we headed to the car in silence. The ride was tense, my dad's demeanor cold and unwelcoming. The silence felt heavy, and I fidgeted nervously, sensing something was off.
At home, my dad helped me with my bags and left me in my room. I sat on my bed, the unsettling atmosphere from the car ride still hanging over me. My mom's voice broke the silence, calling me downstairs.
In the living room, my mom took a deep breath before speaking. "Rory, there's something your father and I need to discuss," she said, her eyes hard with a mix of anger and resolve.
"We saw the photos from the premiere," she continued, her tone sharp. My dad chimed in, "Why were you with a boy?"
The question hit me like a punch. I shifted uncomfortably on the sofa, feeling their scrutiny. "Well, Mom, Dad, he's just a friend. His name is Walker," I explained, trying to keep my voice steady.
"But Rory, you know our rules about hanging out with boys," my dad said firmly. "We've discussed this before."
My mom nodded in agreement. "We expected you to focus on your studies and avoid distractions."
I sighed, understanding their concerns but feeling frustrated. "I get it, but Walker is a good friend. He's been really supportive."
The room was thick with unresolved tension, leaving me feeling trapped between my parents' expectations and my desire for genuine friendships.
"Can I at least study with him after school?" I pleaded. "He's helped me improve in school."
My parents exchanged a look before my dad finally said, "Fine, as long as it's for school."
Relieved, I quickly texted Walker with the update.
Walker!
Rory 🐟
Hey
So my parents found out about you and said I can't hang out with you unless it's for school. We can still meet up after school, but that's it.
Walker!
Oh
As long as I get to see you then that all that is important.
