Chapter 6: Dance Reactions
Songs: She Wants To Move by Neptunes
Jalenas POV
After we finished getting dressed we walked into the gym. There were about a total of twenty girls, I figured was a good amount of people. Having enough girls on a team gives a dance routine a good affect when you perform it, I always thought. Looking around the gym I saw who I assumed was the dance instructor in the middle of the gym with the group of girls surrounding her. "Hi Ms. Weeks we have a new comer here to try out, this is Jalena." Krista told her as we walked up to her. "She would also like to tryout for the captain spot too." She then leaned close to her and whispered. "Between you and me we need her, I just know she can help us get to the finals this year the stars told me last night that something great was going to help our team out." Well ok if the stars told her that just makes it better right I thought looking at her strangely.
Ms. Weeks with her eighty's styled hair, that was, well I don't know what it was... bright yellow like Rainbowbrite maybe. Yeah it was definitely more like a yellow than blonde. It may even have and orange tint to it too. She also had on a pair of bright blue colored spandex that even my mom wouldn't have worn back then at least I surely hope she didn't because these looked cray-z.
"Well like forsure, what kind of experience do you have?" She asked me twirling her side ponytail. I started telling her my years of training she got all excited jumping up and down like a little girl. Wait did she say 'like forsure'? "Ok awesomely tubular let's see what you can do ok?" She then turned back to the group, gestured with her hands for everyone to come closer. "All right ladies let's get started, let's start with our stretching and cross the floor work then we will start the tryouts." She pranced around like a kid too skipping and hopping from one spot to the other.
We all picked a spot on the gym floor to start stretching while Krista ran over to the radio to start the music. "Jalena Have you lead a class before? Ms. Weeks asked I nodded my head then remembered my mom would have smack the back of my head for doing that and answered her with a yes ma' am. " Would you like to help Krista lead us in stretching?" Ms. Weeks questioned me again.
"Yes ma'am." I said walking up to the front to stand next to Krista. Once the music came on Madonna's 'Lucky Star' blared through the gym I struggled to hold in my laugh.
"Nice choice of music, Krista." I giggled.
"Hey don't laugh Ms. Weeks is stuck in the eighties as you can tell by the way she's dressed." She said.
After about 30 min. of Bananarama, the Go-Go's and even some Cyndi Lauper. We were warmed up and ready for some today's music. Krista ran over to change the music thank goodness.
When Rhianna's song 'Only Girl' came on we started doing across the floor work, step kicks from front then to the side and then back all the while Ms. Weeks yelling to make sure we kept our toes pointed, posture straight, and heads up. The stuff we were doing wasn't any different form my old dance studio class warm-ups From Chaine and Pique turns to doing split leaps. It was a good warm up I hadn't danced all summer due to the move except in the privacy of my bedroom. So this was feeling like I truly was home dancing is home to me. I forgot about Justin, his girlfriend starting a new school basically all the worries of a senior I just let it go and had fun with the girls practicing technique.
We were into a good hour and half when she yelled out for tryouts to begin. There were at least 4 new girls trying out including me. The others were returning members but still had to re-tryout. I thought the other girls were pretty good could use some studio training but otherwise had some pretty good talent. I didn't see a reason they would not be able to make it to the finals, but not to be conceited or anything I just knew I was better. But from what I saw from the girls work ethic was that they could be pushed a little harder maybe more time on there technique.
