Chapter Thirty Three: Fish Food!
Episode Nine: Feelings Are Hard
"Hey, your mom let me in." Sophie spoke. "Hi, my beautiful New Yorker." Maxine said, kissing Sophie. "Guess what. I found this bus from Boston to New York. It's only eight bucks. Less than a latte." Maxine ranted before noticing Sophie's face. "Are you okay?" Maxine asked. "Max... You know, a lot of the time I feel like... a loner, or like my friends don't really know me or, I don't know, maybe I just don't know how to be myself around them, but... with you, it's like taking a vacation from all of that." Sophie started.
"A vacation." Maxine exclaimed. "I'm not the Florida Keys. I'm a person." She said jokingly. "You breaking up with me?" She asked, also playing around. "Yeah." Sophie answered making Maxine's smile fade. There was a pause. "Oh my God. I...I was just saying...I didn't mean that, but... You're breaking up with me?" Maxine asked, tearing up.
"This is really hard. I just... I don't wanna hurt you. And there's nothing wrong with you. You're a great girlfriend. I just... I don't...I don't see it working when I go to college." Sophie explained. "It's only November. You don't... You don't love me?" Maxine asked, her voice breaking. "It just doesn't feel like...you would hope it would when...like, if you really knew." Sophie told her.
They both cried softly in silence. "Can I hug you?" Sophie asked. "Yeah." Maxine agreed. Sophie hugged her and Max hugged her back. They pulled away and there was silence again as Sophie sniffled "I'm gonna go." Sophie said, trying not to cry. "Yeah." Maxine said as Sophie picked up her stuff. Maxine sucked in a breath, looking at Sophie who looked back at her. Maxine quickly looked away as Sophie left, wiping her tears that kept flooding. "What?" She questioned in sobs.
At the same time, Dallas laid on Marcus's bed. He was awake, just not moving. "Are you okay?" She asked, playing with his hair. "Yeah." He spoke. His hands were wrapped around her as her legs straddled him sideways. "I'm really sorry Marcus." Dallas spoke. "Don't apologize. It's my fault." Marcus spoke. "No it isn't. I caused you so much stress." Dallas said. "You didn't. If anything I caused you more harm." Marcus spoke making Dallas sadly chuckle. "More harm than a concussion, damn." She joked. Marcus softly chuckled, kissing her chin.
Dallas snuggled into him, loving his warmth. "Do you still.. Burn?" He asked. Dallas didn't respond making Marcus hug her tighter. Dallas sighed softly, burying her head in his chest. "I only want to talk about you and your feelings now. I've been too self absorbed." Dallas says. "I love talking about you." Marcus mumbles, kissing her shoulder. "Can I..tell you something?" Dallas asks.
