Chapter 18

Delilah's POV

I wiped the last of my tears as I walked deeper into the woods. I was thankful that Dritran had planned out everything in such detail for me, but I couldn't help but feel the loss again of not having my twin by my side. At least when I was in the prison I knew I would get to see him one last time before The Hunt. But now, I didn't know if I would ever see him again.

Careful to keep my footsteps light and not breathe too harshly, I tried to sense my wolf but I was still blocked off from her. I sighed in frustration, I didn't know how to bring our connection back, and without her I was just as weak as a normal human in the middle of a forest filled with supernatural creatures.

I shook my head, now was not the time to be negative, even though it was my default at this point. On the bright side, it was mandatory training from the pack that we were able to work with our human side and survive no matter the situation just in case.

So I was confident I could at least hunt, and avoid large predators at very least if I had to, I looked around again at the trees so high I couldn't see the tops of them. I had to be prepared to always expect the unexpected too.

I looked around, and decided to start walking, from what I remembered the book said to simply follow the red moss that grows on the trees, and I would eventually reach the home of the old lady. Since it was so foggy I knew if I wanted to continue, at least somewhat safely, I needed to look for the red moss. But of course, it wasn't going to be that easy.

Going up the first tree, I walked around it, no red moss in sight. I went from tree to tree, hoping for a single flash of red but it was nowhere to be found.

"Damn." I said out loud, and it felt good, I really had needed that. After taking a deep breath, I reached behind me into the backpack and took out the journal from Dritian. Luckily he was so prepared he made me a table of contents that I could quickly go to the page I needed.

Scanning the page, it gave me the details I needed. The title was The Old Lady, and he had done a quick sketch of a woman hunched over wearing a hood. I had to laugh at the little note he left.

By the way know one knows what she truly looks like so I just did my best with the generic drawing I did.

The Old Lady is said to be neither good nor bad, she just is. Rumors say if you go to her home in the middle of the dark forest, if you prove you can make it through she will provide guidance. What guidance I'm not sure, but it's something to go towards at least.

There were a couple more lines about contrasting tales of the deeds she had helped others with. But what caught my was what I had read when I had first received the book.

If red moss isn't in sight. Go North.

I sighed, well it was at least something. Shutting the journal I tucked into the pocket of my cargo pants. I squinted up at the sky, what little of it I could see through the high branches of the tree anyways. I would travel during the day, or whatever resembled day in the dark forest and sleep in the trees at night.

Happy I at least had some type of plan, I set forward, heading north.

I hummed a little tune I had made up, and had been itching to play on the violin. It was a tune that wasn't as sad as the last one I had did, but not happy either. A weird in bewteen.

Lost in thought, I almost didn't hear the noise until a shadow moved in front of me. I groaned, I had thought they would leave me alone being in literally the Dark Forest, but I guess not.
