I couldn't tell what was going through his head as he cried into my knees.
He pulled away from my knees with rapid sniffles and still trembling lips and whispered something I almost didn't catch.
"I-I'm sorry..."
My heart felt like it was ripped out of me and I wanted to tell him that there was nothing to be sorry for, because there wasn't.
But the words just wouldn't come out, so without thinking, I pulled him into my arms and into a hug.
"Don't be..."
Those were the only words I could get out as I took a deep breath in, hoping he got what I meant.
