Becky slowly opened her eyes, wincing as the sunlight hit her face with merciless intensity. She frowned, the headache from her hangover pulsating in sharp waves through her skull. If she didn't take an aspirin soon, she was going to look like death incarnate by the time her internship started.
Fuck.
Her first day.
She shot up from the bed, her heart racing as she scanned the room. Her eyes landed on a brunette girl lying next to her, her naked back facing upward, the blanket barely covering her.
Becky moved cautiously, not wanting to wake her up. She crept toward the edge of the bed, lifting one foot after the other, but the girl beside her stirred, mumbling as she started to wake.
"Leaving already? Don't you want the morning experience too?"
The girl turned toward Becky with a smirk that was far too confident for someone who had just spent the night in a stranger's bed. Becky felt a rush of embarrassment-she couldn't even remember her name.
"Uh... No." Becky tilted her head and flashed a tight smile, trying to steer the moment to an end.
She just wanted to get out of there. This wasn't supposed to be complicated. They'd met at a bar, hooked up, and now it was over. That was all it ever was. She didn't do relationships-her only focus was becoming one of the best doctors in the country.
She had thirty minutes before her first day of internship began, and she was still naked as the day she was born.
"Look, I'm really sorry, but you need to go." She scrambled to collect her scattered clothes from the floor, her hands shaking slightly as she tried to piece together what was where. "I'm sure you know where the door is."
The girl, unfazed, reached for something and handed it to her. The smirk never wavered from her lips. "Aren't you forgetting something?"
Becky blinked down at the panties in the girl's hand and then up at her. The awkwardness of the moment hit her again, but she smiled sheepishly and grabbed the item from her. "Thanks, I guess."
The girl didn't let up. "Come on. One more time, and then, if it's really that bad, you won't ever see me again."
Becky hesitated. The night before wasn't bad at all, in fact, it was... unforgettable. But that wasn't the point. She quickly pushed those thoughts aside.
"No. Seriously. I'm late, and I really don't want to be late on my first day of work."
The girl looked at her with a mix of curiosity and amusement. "Your house is nice. Big. You should have a roommate."
"Yeah, I'm looking for one. Just moved in here," Becky muttered, then stopped herself, realizing how much she was revealing. "My mom got me this place before... before she..." Becky trailed off, unsure why she was sharing this with a stranger.
The girl waited expectantly, clearly eager to hear more, but Becky shook her head and forced a nervous laugh. "You really don't need to know any of that."
The girl raised an eyebrow, but Becky's uncomfortable chuckle seemed to put an end to the conversation.
"We don't have to do this," Becky added quickly.
"You mean talk? I didn't ask for a conversation," the girl teased, her eyes glinting mischievously. "In fact, I was hoping for another round."
Becky's thoughts briefly lingered on the warmth of the girl's smile. She radiated that effortless charm, the kind that made it so easy to imagine falling for her. But Becky shook herself mentally.
No. Focus. You're going to be late.
"Okay, look, I'm going to take a quick shower," Becky said, backing away. "When I get out, you won't be here. So... uh, goodbye... um..."
Becky stretched out her hand for a farewell, but then froze mid-motion, realizing she still didn't remember the girl's name.
"Freen," the girl answered softly, taking Becky's hand gently in hers.
"Freen. Right," Becky said, offering a strained smile. "I'm Becky."
"Becky. Nice name. Short for something?"
"Yeah, Rebecca," she said with a slight laugh, half-smiling as she backed up until she bumped into the bathroom door. "Okay. Bye."
Without waiting for a response, Becky spun around and hurried into the bathroom, closing the door behind her with a sigh of relief.
Well, that was a disaster.
