Note: This was another unfinished work I was so excited to post, until I left it in the dust. I was massively interested in paranormal investigations at one point and it inspired me to start this piece. I thought it'd be a unique topic to explore in a fic like this and it was! But it went down a route I decided I no longer like, so I also left the snippets out of this chapter and have just inserted the part of the story I actually wrote.
You stood at the head of a cluster of people, all of them deep in consideration. That is exactly what you expected of them. They were police officers, there were probably more important cases on their minds than aiding you in your own strange investigations. One of your candidates scowled into his steaming paper cup, clearly not thrilled about your proposition. He sipped slowly, his grey eyes showing nothing but cold emotion. You ruled him out on your mental list and your eyes went to another. An older man, about twenty years wiser than the first one. He ran a hand down his silver beard, trying to shake off the madness of what you said. He didn't look impressed either, so you crossed him off as well, not needing him to say a word. You scanned the rest of the room, hoping for one to accept the challenge, but none did. They either looked at you with a blank expression, or avoided eye contact completely. You sighed, it was no use coming there, the local police didn't want to help. The man with the cup of coffee spoke first,
"Look, I understand what you're trying to do here but after that, I don't think I want to go into that house." You nodded, though you didn't need his verbal affirmation. It was clear, most of them were afraid of the house, whether they were sceptics or not. The older man added,
"Yeah, I can't believe I'm sayin' this, but I agree with Reed. That's some spooky shit goin' on there." You made a sorry looking face, you knew this meeting wouldn't end well from the get go. The other officers hesitantly got up and left the room, not wanting much more of your persistence and ghost stories. The only one remaining in the room was the old man, who already declined your offer but stayed anyway. It was quiet, except for the humming of the ancient heating system. You gathered your thoughts, maybe it was best to go alone? Lockdown events didn't go well with you alone... Footsteps cut off your reverie.
"Hey, Connor!" The old man projected his words across the room to a much younger, more handsome being. He welcomed himself into the room, light on his feet.
"Yes, Lieutenant?" He replied, his voice bubbly. There was the enthusiasm you were searching for. He stared at his superior with the innocence of a puppy.
"This young lady has an interesting proposal, I thought you might want an individual investigation without me, after the last case." Connor protested,
"But Lieutenant, I was assigned to all cases involving androids." The older man rolled his eyes, quickly coming up with a come back,
"Yeah, and this case will, you." Connor opened his mouth to speak again, nothing came for a moment. His face contorted and that told you he had finished with his childish tantrum.
"Fine, since as no one else is here to assist her, I will do as you say." The old man winks at you, telepathically saying, there's your partner. You gratefully smiled back and let him leave the room too. You sat down at the now empty table and Connor politely did the same. You shook his hand and introduced yourself,
"Hi, (Y/N) (L/N), paranormal investigator." For once your job sounded abnormal. Yep, you investigated places infested with ghosts, spirits, entities and unexplainable anomalies.
"My name is Connor. I'm the android sent by CyberLife." Okay... you usually worked with other humans, but this is all you had. Better than nothing, you told yourself, knowing it was better to have an android along for the ride than no one. He next asked about your predicament, "What is your situation?"
