KEEPSAKE

Your hand reached out to skim the wooden box's surface, though your fingers came in contact with something else. You were intercepted by Connor, who appeared to have the same idea as you. He wore that classic inquisitive look on his face that made him so soft and innocent. The touch of his synthetic skin sent a shockwave through you, Connor still unaware of your feelings for him. You recoiled, taking your hand away from his. Words never fell right when you talked to him, even in professional situations.

"I- uh, didn't know you were analysing that, sorry. There's a- uh footprint here, I'll look at that." You veered in another direction, hoping he wouldn't see the blood surfacing in your cheeks.

"No, save yourself the trouble (Y/N), look through the box. It will be more efficient if I analyse the footprint." The android detective oblivious to your behaviour, or chose not to bring it up. Either way, you were grateful for it. Prying the box's lid open, you searched through its contents, looking for key details that would link to solving this case. Connor crouched down and gazed at the evidence on the floor, soon reporting back to you with the stats for the footprint.

"Judging by the size of this male's shoe size, the perpetrator is approximately around six feet tall." He stated matter-of-factly.

"After all, your foot length is about fifteen percent of your height." You mentioned back to your basic training in forensics. The android hadn't finished his explanation.

"Also, by the consistency of residue, this print was recent. The mud here hasn't yet dried," Connor dips two fingers into the mud and holds it up to show you. Your face distorted.

"You fucked up the print!" You exclaimed harshly, though you kept your volume at a minimum.

"Before doing so, I also identified that the male's shoe was CyberLife standard issue, confirming the perpetrator was in fact an android." You pursed your lips into a fine line, cursing yourself for jumping the gun and snapping at Connor.

"Well, I guess we have to find out who the victim is." Your attention went back to the box you were searching through. Multiple things were revealed to you in opening the box. Items filled the hollow wooden prism, from a golden locket, to photographs, to childhood memories, to quirky little keepsakes that had zero importance to you.

The locket for one, filled a gap in solving this mystery. Lifting the delicate chain out and pulling apart the pendant, it had two photos. The thing was tacky, like something you would have done when you were eight. But the photos had told you of the victim and a man you had never seen before. Searching through the other photos quickly explained who this man was. He was the victim's childhood friend that became her husband. He was obviously dead long ago as you found legal documents announcing his death in 2031.

"The victim was a widow," you explained to Connor who was trying to look over your shoulder. As you shuffled through more paperwork, you found more information. Confirmations on the purchase of an android, invoices and receipts attached. That was all in 2036. "She bought the android two years prior to the incident." You relayed to Connor, who still hadn't moved an inch. "But what was this guy's motive for killing her? It doesn't add up. Wait-" under all the official forms, you discovered a small plastic bag. "Lookie here Connie, we've got ourselves an addict." You presented it to the android, teasing him with the bag of red crystal-like substances. He took it but neither of you needed the stuff to be tested to know what it was.

"Red ice. Explains the traces of its components in her saliva."

"Ew, you licked that shit?" You could never stand analysing the bodies at the scenes, you hated that it still made you a little nauseous every time you arrived at a homicide.

"No, I merely had to scan it, she was foaming at the mouth. It was made to look like an overdose, but it was deliberate." A smirk tugged your lips.

"Smart cookie, what do you suggest then?"

"Since the tracks are still new, I think the criminal hasn't gone far."
