Chapter 9

All through the night Risa slept there knowing that her brother would be alright, but the truth is he wouldn't, he'd never be alright. As that morning when the doctors came in to check on him. He didn't wake up."Excuse me,"The day nurse said,"I'm Nurse Uriah." The nurse was an african american and had long black curly hair that was tied back into a loose ponytail, she wore plain pink shrubs."Yes?"Risa asked."We're worried about your, um husband?"They guessed."No he's my brother, and how come?"Risa asked, she was now more worried then ever, what was wrong with her brother!"You see, we believe he's gone into a coma,"Uriah explained as she and Risa moved out into the hall."What? Was it his injury or the poison?"Risa asked demanding to know, she was now choking on tears, but she would no matter what, not cry."We believe the poison was to strong and in his already damaged state, his body just couldn't take it anymore,"Nurse Uriah said she then patted Risa on the back."He will wake up right?"Risa asked half afraid of what the nurse would say and half knowing that she needed to know."Unless we find a cure, chances are he won't,"The nurse said."What?"Risa asked as he heart was torn in two,"How am I going to tell his kids, they already lost their mother!""I don't know that is purely up to you and his other family,"Uriah stated, as if she's given this exact news over and over again, chances are she probably had dealt with something similar."He doesn't have any other family, that lives in the area!"Risa exclaimed as she threw her arms into the air, how could this have happened?"We'd recommend calling the other family,"Uriah stated speaking as if she was speaking for the entire hospital staff."I can't call them!"Risa tried to explain,"Our parents don't have cell service and our brother is in a mental institution!""We're very sorry,"Uriah said,"I'll leave you to talk with the children." The children. Right. Talking to them was the last thing she wanted to do. How could she tell this to her children, she then called their grandmother, not her mother but their other grandmother."Hello?"Rusty's mother in law, Mary Lou stated as she answered the phone, she was obviously very distressed that someone had called and awoken her from her sleep."Yes, I'm calling about your grandchildren,"Risa explained, hoping she hadn't angered her too much."Which ones?"Mary Lou asked."Betty, and Ricky, Louise's children,"Risa explained, giving the answers straight to her not saying anymore nor any less."Okay, what about them?"Mary Lou asked."Your daughter, died,"Risa stated, as she braced herself for the wailing of the woman. Yet she did not seem to shed a tear."So, they still have their father,"The elderly lady assumed."Their father went into a coma this morning,"Risa explained."What?!"Mary Lou exclaimed,"The poor children!""I know, they were staying with me when it all happened,would you like to come to discuss custody over your grandchildren?"Risa asked, figuring that the elderly woman would certainly want to be there to comfort them."Yes, where are you?"Mary Lou asked as she changed into her day clothes, and grabbed her purse."We're at the hospital right off of the highway,"Risa instructed."Alright, see you soon, I'll bring the children some gifts,"Mary Lou stated as she went to her cupboard wear she kept the odds and ins she gave her grandchildren for special occasions."Alright, bye,"Risa stated. She then put her head into her hands."Mom's dead?"She heard young Ricky ask, he must've heard Risa on the phone with their grandmother! How dare she be so foolish to think they wouldn't overhear! She should've called from the cafeteria or something! Risa didn't know what to say, how do you tell a six year old this! All Risa did was nod. She then watched as tears began to fall from Ricky's eyes. She moved to wipe them, but her nephew pushed her hand away and wiped them away himself."I'm so sorry,"Risa stated as she bent down to his height."Where's dad? I want to talk to him, you said he'd be here!"Ricky exclaimed his face turning beet red."He's here, he just isn't in a state to talk to you right now,"RIsa tried to explain,"Your grandmother's coming though, she's even bringing you gifts." She attempted to lighten the mood. Normally any child would be happy to know they would be getting a gift, but no gift can make the pain from losing their mother go away, none at all."I don't want a gift!"Ricky exclaimed,"I want Mom!" Risa then realized something, she remembered back when she Rusty and their brother Rocky had to leave after their parents were thrown in jail, she had to break the news to them as well, she can certainly do it all over again, however this is why she never had kids, raising her siblings was hard enough on her."I know, but here's the thing, I'll tell you if you'll listen,"Risa stated as she pulled Ricky into an embrace, he then nodded in reply to his aunt's question, his aunt then pulled his face to hers and talked very slowly,"Ricky, your mom is gone, she is never coming back, you won't ever see her again, but she still looks down on you from heaven, she wants you to be strong, so Ricky do it, and you're now in charge of Betty, not completely but you're the closest relative to her, do you understand?"There now she had explained it all of it, it almost felt easier then when she had explained something similar to her brother's, at least she could say Ricky's mom was looking down at him, she couldn't have told that to her brothers, cause their mom wasn't dead. Wait a minute! Her mother! She could save Rusty! Their mother was an expert in poison, Risa thought back to how her mother had learned of every poison, past, present, human, witch, warlock, demon, angel. But she did not know if their mother was still alive. While her thoughts were wondering. Ricky manned up he then went back to where Scott was, who give him a smile of symphony, he then picked up a coloring book and a box of crayons, and invited his sister to come color with him. Risa smiled at that, Ricky would be fine just fine. All she had to do now was save her brother, and if she could get back to Silas, and back,with their mother, within a week, as Scott had explained to her about the deal, she could save him, she then realized she couldn't do this alone. She decided that she would talk with Scott and see if he could come with her, once her nephew's grandmother got there. Then they could get on a plan to Alabama, then on a boat to Silas, all of that would take about two and a half days, and she would have to do all of that twice, so she would have three days to find her Mother, which hopefully with the help of Scott, she would be able to. She will save her brother.
