You were coughing violently. Your throat, eyes, and chest were all burning faintly. Those bastards, poisoning you without a second thought. You could have died! And it was all just a days work for them, so casual and putting your life at risk...
You sighed, which caused you to cough again. Arceus damn you...
You flooded back to the current scene. The room was filled with the constant soft buzzing of the air conditioning.
The lights were off, spreading the room with a cold blue-gray. Sunrays from the window cut through it, painting small yellow streaks in front of the window.
You were in a bed. The fabrics smelled unfamiliar, and unused. Probably a guestroom in a large house, and probably some sort of base for their criminal activity.
You figured they had taken your bag. And Totodile, of course. You would figure that out later. But for now...
You reached down. Your overshirt was still tied to your waist. You slowly untied it and checked its pockets.
You felt it. Your phone. Those idiots.
You could call 911, but you thought about what would happen if you got caught in the process. You had no idea.
A big organization like the ones they're working for had definitely been faced by other victims, you thought. And with such bad execution---you hid your phone back in the pocket---you wondered how they hadn't been shut down already.
Your plan would be to gather as much information as possible, and then, with that all compiled, you could do more damage to them.
You ducked down and checked your phone battery. 56%. You put it on airplane mode, turned the brightness all the way down, and muted it. Your notes app would still save offline, and you needed this 56% to last as long as possible.
You just needed to make sure to not screw everything up and get caught with it.
You heard movement from outside your door. You slid your phone away and tucked your overshirt back down to your waist underneath the blankets.
The door was unlocked. You stared at the knob until it turned.
James opened the door, walked in, and closed it behind him. "Oh. You're awake." He locked the door.
Your brows furrowed. "And just what were you planning to do if I was asleep?"
He didn't seem to get what you were insinuating until after a few seconds. He was clearly uncomfortable.
He's not the one getting kidnapped, you thought, and his uncomfortableness made you resent him in that moment.
"We've captured you strictly for business purposes. Once you do what we need you to, you'll be back on your way like nothing ever happened."
That seems very unlikely, you thought. If they got rid of me after I fulfilled their wants, it would be much more effective to just kill me. If they released me alive, I could just report them like any other crime.
It was just a lie to get you to do what they wanted.
You huffed. "Sure. Like I can just forget."
James smirked. "What's with this attitude? Want to stay for longer?"
"Like hell I would. Now just tell me what I need to do for you."
"It's not that simple. You work for us for as long as we want, and once we're no longer interested in you, we will let you go alive."
"Why alive?"
"Would you rather it be dead?"
"Wouldn't you?"
