Skye awoke with an embarrassing snort as the bus pulled to a stop. She pushed herself away from the window (wincing at the kink in her neck from being in an uncomfortable position for so long) and wiped the drool from the side of her mouth as she gathered her bearings.
"Nice nap?" The Wishling boy asked as he stood up. Skye stretched and nodded, letting out a yawn. She felt very refreshed. Her mother was right, naps were energizing. She wondered why little Skye had been so adverse to them. Skye collected her purse and the bag from Treasure and then followed her classmates off the bus. Everyone headed to their lockers to get their bags before heading into homeroom to receive their homework. Miss Rittenhouser walked around passing the books out.
"Your math homework tonight is section three, pages fifteen through seventeen." Miss Rittenhouser said as she placed a thick book on Skye's desk as she passed by. Ava came up to Skye's desk and leaned against it as she zipped up her silvery backpack.
"Homework will be the death of me!" Ava groaned, a gruesome expression on her face. "I wish we didn't have any tonight."
Skye's ears pricked up when she heard the word Wish. She really wanted Ava to be happy, so surely that meant helping her with any extra little wishes that came up while she was around. Having a happy wisher couldn't hurt, could it? Skye was pretty sure it wouldn't, in fact having a happy Wisher would be splendid! Both because Skye genuinely wanted Ava happy and because a happy Wisher might mean more Positive Wish Energy and well.... Vis needed all the extra Wish Energy it could get.
Skye stood up. This was the easiest wish ever. Skye sidled up to Miss Rittenhouser as she was busily stacking papers on her desk and tapped her shoulder to get her attention. Miss Rittenhouser turned around and Skye peered up into her eyes.
"Maybe we shouldn't have any homework tonight." Skye said in a low voice. Miss Rittenhouser shuffled the papers in her hands, clearly a little distracted.
"I'm sorry, Skye, did you say something?" Miss Rittenhouser asked. Skye glanced around, making sure none of the other students were in earshot before trying again.
"Maybe we shouldn't have any homework tonight." Skye said, more intently. Miss Rittenhouser nodded.
"Maybe we shouldn't have any homework tonight." Miss Rittenhouser said, loud enough for the entire class to hear. A stunned silence came over the classroom. Then, everyone erupted into cheers. Well, everyone except for Mindy, who looked plain confused.
"What?" Mindy questioned, sure she had misheard. "What does she mean no homework?" Marcus immediately slapped a hand over her mouth.
"Don't be that kid, Min." Marcus said. "Nobody likes that kid." Mindy jerked her head back and shot him a deadpan look.
"Wow," Ava said as she returned her textbook to her desk along with the other students. "Sometimes wishes do come true, just like that!"
"Yeah," Skye said to herself with a laugh. "Just like that!" The bell signaling the end of yet another school day rang and all the students streamed out of the classroom like migrating cheering salmon, clearly eager to get away before Miss Rittenhouser came to her senses. Skye, Rhea, Selene, Estella, Juno, Callisto, Halo, Faye, Nova, Maia, Vela, Lyra, Mindy, Jack, Marcus and Sally joined the stream and followed it out into the hallway and out the school building into the yard.
"Whoo! No homework! Time to live it up!" Jack cheered. Mindy raised an eyebrow at him.
"Doing what? Playing with your model trains?" Mindy asked, sarcastically. Jack gasped in dramatic offense, a hand over his heart.
"How dare you?! I'll have you know that playing with model trains is a perfectly acceptable way to pass the time." Jack said, turning his head away. Mindy smirked.
