There was a light drizzle when I left Abnegation in the early morning. By the time Candor came into view the sky had cleared into a dusky grey and relief settled over me as I could see some Dauntless hanging around outside or training.
It was still very early in the morning when I walked toward the glass doors to the compound. I noticed the new stares and whispers I was given on my approach. I recognized a few faces but no one I considered a friend.
"Stop right there" a Candor security guard stood up as he made his way around the desk he just occupied. I ignored him and continued to walk toward the elevators. "I said stop" and the sound of the gun's safety clicking off caused me to pause. "Put your hands on your head." He then whispered something sounding like backup.
"Are you kidding me?" I turned and look incredulously at him. I could see those Dauntless that were outside were now coming inside.
"Put your hands up" the guards words were laced with a hint of nervousness.
"Or what?"
"We have orders to detain you" I heard from my left another man entered the lobby. He seemed more experienced and carried himself with authority. "Under any means necessary" he rolled his shoulders.
"I came to see Dauntless leadership." I eyed the growing crowd of onlookers both Candor and Dauntless. I looked to the members of my faction whose faces looked like a mix of confliction and anger.
"Put your hands behind your head" the one in charge instructed.
"Am I under arrest?" I asked suspiciously.
"Yes" he answered as he pulled out a set of cuffs. "Do not make this difficult" I laughed.
"Fucking touch me and I will-" the guards had now increased to 7 and had encircled me while my faction members did nothing.
"Miss Eaton" a new person entered the lobby. Jack Kang, the representative for Candor. "If you could come with me" he said politely with all the stern authority of a leader. "No cuffs Richard." Kang motioned to the head security guard and walked in the direction of the elevators. I looked around at everyone watching me. I could say fuck it all and fight like I was trained to, but what would that do for me. I needed answers and I needed to find my friends. I needed to get to Eric.
I strode toward the now open elevators with Candor security following close behind. It was at full capacity with Kang, myself and the Candor security. No one spoke a word as we made our way through hallways and offices. We finally arrived in what I was assuming as Kang's office as two standing security that were posted outside opened the door.
"Now Miss Eaton-"
"Theo" I interrupted. "If you plan on arresting me you should use my name."
"I was under the impression you were Theodora Eaton" Kang sat down behind his desk and motioned to an empty chair.
"When we enter Dauntless we are allowed to choose our name. Mine is Theo." I remained standing. "Just Theo".
"My apologies Theo" he gave a polite nod. "Are you aware of the charges brought against you?"
"No" I breathed out annoyed "but I can guess who made these allegations" I leaned on the chair's back and sighed. "Erudite"
"Correct, you, your brother and friend are being accused of crimes against humanity for running the simulation attack on Abnegation." Jack eyed me in a way that he was reading my body language. I remember Christina once saying something about human lie detectors.
"Of fucking course" I scoffed and finally sat down in the chair. "Do you believe these charges?" I asked.
"I've seen the footage."
