I woke up to see a bright light. That was all I could see.
I honestly thought that I died and that was me going into the light.
But then the room started to come into frame and I could notice the white ceiling and white walls. I could hear the beeping of the heart monitor. I was in a hospital room.

I tried sitting up which caused a shooting pain to go through my arm.
"ow" I groaned.
Somebody next to me sat up and rushed over to my side.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you" A familiar voice said.
I smiled and laid back down. "I shouldn't have helped you"
Kiara laughed a little bit. "no you shouldn't have"
I looked over at her and she had worry all throughout her eyes. Then it hit me. I'm a minor in the hospital. They most definitely called my mother.

"My mom. Where is she?" I asked, fear running through my body.
She stayed quiet for a second. "She is figuring stuff out with your guy's insurance. Something isn't working."
I slowly nodded my head. "Is she mad?"
"More like utterly terrified," Kiara laughed.
"That makes sense" I laughed with her. "What am I going to say?"
Kie shook her head and shrugged, "I have no clue. The truth? I guess....just leave out the part of why we were in the marsh. Say, like, we were on our way back. A boat showed up. Started shooting at us. And they got you."
"Great." I muttered.

Kiara smiled. "Well, everyone is waiting out in the waiting room. They said only one person was aloud back here and we decided it would be best if it was me. You know, since your mom actually likes me."
I smiled and nodded my head. "good choice" I then looked down at the bandage around my arm. "what exactly happened?"
Kiara took in a deep breath and then let it out. "when you threw the net over into the water a bullet hit your arm, just missing your Detroit muscle. You lost a decent amount of blood but we got you here in just enough time to be able to get you through surgery." She explained.

surgery?
"Surgery went well! Apparently your insurance should be able to cover it all which is awesome."
I nodded my head.
"how are you feeling?" Kie asked.
"drained"
She smiled and nodded her head. "you probably will for a little while."
I looked up at her. "how long will it take to heal?"
"the doctors said about 6-8 weeks to fully heal but you will be able to take the bandage off in about 4."
I nodded my head. "How long have I been in here?"
Kiara stayed silent for a moment, then spoke. "3 days..."
"3 days?!" I repeated, my eyes as wide as ever.
"yeah..."

It went silent for a minute or two until Kiara finally broke it.
"do you want someone else to come in here or do you want me to call someone else?" She asked.
I smiled lightly. "Can John B come in here?"
"Of course" Kie nodded, then turned and left.
As I sat there in silence with nothing but my own thoughts and it was slowly killing me. All I could think about was the pain that I went through. The throbbing pain. It was icy cold but also warm. Very warm. My arm felt as if it was the only part of my body. But it also felt as if it wasn't even attached to my body. So much pain. Numbing pain.

I cringed as the thoughts continued to spiral through my mind.
The seconds I waited turned into minutes.
What the hell was taking so long?
I watched the clock that was in the corner of the room. It was a children's clock. I must've been in the pediatric side of the hospital.
It had hands with fingers pointing to the numbers. It read: 3:57
Then: 4:00
Then: 4:05
Then: 4:06
Then: 4:07
Then: 408
Finally the door opened.

But it was not J.B. No. It was my mother. My mother. Mother. Mother. Mother. Mom.
She looked so extremely relieved to see me but also horrified. Angry. Disappointed. Scared.
She ran over to me and rapped her arms around me.
That caused pain.
"Ow" I groaned and she immediately pulled away.
"Oh-I'm sorry, are you okay, baby? Do you need anything? How are you feeling?"
She was not mad??
I smiled. "I'm okay, mom"
"Oh, please, Haley. You were....you were shot." My mom stated. "How the hell were you shot?! In the Outer Banks. And by who? Who the hell would shoot a sixteen year old girl?"
She seemed desperate. She wanted to know answers that no one would be able to give her. I knew that. The pogues knew that. She did not.

I slowly shook my head. "I don't remember it all very well...."
"Say, like, we were on our way back. A boat showed up. Started shooting at us. And they got you."
"We were on our way back to John Bs-We were in the marsh. Apparently it's closed today? The Sheriff saw us and told us that we weren't aloud to be there. So we started to go back. As we were there was some boat that started following us. We sped up cause it kinda scared us. Then I remember there being shots. Then it's just fuzzy...."
That was as brief as I could put it. I left out as much as I could.
I remembered every detail.
Every moment.
The only thing that was fuzzy to me was when we finally made it home and I got set down in the Twinkie. I started to lose consciousness so everything was in and out.
I remembered the rest. Every second of it.

My moms eyes were wide. She looked horrified. "Do you remember what the boat looked like or what the people did? Were they male, female? Did you recognize them?"
I slowly shook my head. "No.."
She sighed. "We are going to stay at the Cameron's for a little bit and then we are going home, okay? I don't trust it here. It's not safe anymore."
My heart immediately dropped. "What?!"
