23. Horcruxes

Lilly's POV
Harry went to the Fat Lady's portrait wanting to go to bed, but she said the password changed and if he didn't like it he could take it up with the headmaster. Nearly Headless Nick told Harry Dumbledore returned an hour ago.
Harry immediately ran to Dumbledore's office and they entered the memory.
Slughorn explained to young Tom Riddle about Horcruxes. They are parts of a soul kept in a object. To put it there, they must do something so inhumane that it would literally tear the soul apart. Kill..
Voldemort had succeeded, he made so Horcruxes. One the diary Harry destroyed in the Chamber of Secrets. Voldemort left the diary behind for a future Hogwarts student to find and continue his legacy.
Another was Marvolo Gaunt's ring. Dumbledore found it in the ruins of Marvolo's house given it was abandoned. He destroyed it. Four Horcruxes left.
Dumbledore thought they were to be something of the founders of Hogwarts. For sure Salazar Slytherin's locket and Helga Hufflepuff's cup. Also, something of Ravenclaw's and Gryffindor's. Dumbledore was also curious about the behavior or his snake, Nagini.
Harry wondered if Voldemort could feel when a Horcrux was destroyed. Dumbledore didn't know if he felt it as it came or if it was before he died, but in one instance he wasn't aware. Lucius Malfoy was given the diary and did not know of its value. Waiting for his master's orders he was to give the day to a Hogwart's student. He did, but thought his master to be dead. So, using the diary for his own gain in order to make him seen better than Arthur Weasley it became his own demise. After the fiasco at the Ministry he feels quite happy to be in Azkaban right now, away from Voldemort...
Voldemort could be killed if all the Horcruxes are destroyed. Harry underestimated what he had on his side. Love...
He didn't think it was a high deal, but Voldemort sealed his own date by forcing Harry's mother to die, in turn saved him and created his worst enemy. Aiding his enemy to take down Voldemort himself.
Harry has not been tempted to perform or go anywhere near the Dark Arts. Harry said it was because Voldemort killed his mum and dad. In turn, he is protected by his ability to love.
After all of this Harry finally understood what Dumbledore was saying about this. He can either be dragged into that arena or March proudly in there. Some people didn't see the difference, but there was all the difference in the world..
