Chapter 9

Cuz I'm no superman
I hope you like me
As I am

Jack

I looked out the window, watching as the autumn winds blew against the trees, making some of the orange-colored leaves fall off of it's branch and land on the grass below.

I began to doze off as I stared outside of the classroom, wanting the school day to end already despite the fact that it just began.

"...Hello? Jack?"

I turned my head as Elsa's voice broke me out of my trance.

"Oh, sorry." I said, looking over at her.

Her blue eyes seemed to examine my entire face, searching for signs of any emotion.

She raised an eyebrow and glanced toward the front of the classroom, where Ms. Johnson was still discussing the lesson for class this morning.

She looked back at me.

"Everything okay?" She asked innocently, beginning to look concerned.

I nodded.

"Yeah, I just honestly need some time to relax. I've had a lot on my mind lately." I explained, rubbing the back of my neck and she frowned.

"We should hang out with the gang after school. Maybe it'll help you feel better." She said, concern evident in her tone of voice. I gave her a soft smile.

"Thanks, Elsa. That sounds nice, actually." I replied and she gave me a reassuring grin.

"Yeah, of course. We can ask them if they're free during lunch or whenever we see them." She said, and rubbed my arm comfortingly.

I seemingly relaxed at our contact with each other, and let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in.

When our class ended, I walked out into the crowded hallway with Elsa. She still seemed to be concerned, as she wouldn't take her eyes off of me.

"Do you want to tell me about what's been on your mind?" She asked, as we leaned against a wall, facing each other.

I frowned, unsure of what to say.

I definitely couldn't admit that all I've been thinking about was her. I wasn't too confident in how the result of that conversation would end.

"Well, I-I can't really pinpoint it. I guess... college applications, school, my brother..." I attempted to say, trailing off and avoiding eye contact with her.

"I hope you know I'm always here if you need anything, Jack," She reassured, shuffling on her feet. "I don't like seeing you in a bad mood."

I looked over at her with a small grin.

"I know, thanks Elsa. We can talk more about it later. You should probably head to class." I said and she nodded curtly.

"Okay, see you later!" She responded. She stopped leaning on the wall and began walking away to her next class. She looked back at me briefly to wave, and I chuckled before waving back.

I watched as she made her way into her classroom, and I began walking to calculus.

When I arrived, I spotted Merida in our usual spot and I sat down in the empty seat next to her. As I took my backpack off and began getting my stuff ready for class, she looked over at me.

"You look rough. You okay?" She asked, watching me as I flipped to an empty page in my notebook.

"Yeah, just have a lot on my mind."
