CHAPTER ONE
THE ENEMY
≪ ◦ ❖ ◦ ≫

MERCY SANTIAGO IS LATE.

Well, not late in the sense of actually being unpunctual, but in the sense of being behind her own schedule.

She had to stop by the school earlier, despite her winter break having begun a few days ago, just to make sure that everything was carefully locked away. That is the price she pays for being the president of the astronomy club, going to school during her break.

She doesn't want to get in trouble in case anything happens to their telescope or their camera, so she double checks everything (and she doesn't trust the other members of the club, so).

And now, five minutes after her usual time, but still early enough, she's on her way to the dojo. Tapping the steering wheel and feeling the breeze around her, Mercy yawns.

Stupid winter tiredness. The weather isn't even that winterly, it's Southern California after all, but it's like there's a switch in her brain and every time fall turns into winter, her wide-awake default turns into always tired.

Maybe it's getting better once she's at her grandma's house in Nagua. Oh, who is she kidding? Being back in the Dominican Republic will just remind her of her grandfather too much.

And also, Christmas is coming up. After Christmas comes New Year's and that thought makes her sigh loudly.

There's no holiday that she hates more than New Year's.

Her friends are already waiting for her. Tory, already wearing her white gi just like she is, rolls her eyes at something Kyler says, but at the sight of Mercy's gray car, she smiles.

"Finally," Kyler lets out with a groan as soon as Mercy leaves her now parked Porsche.

"I'm not even late, dude." She walks towards them with her brows furrowed.

"Besides, nobody told you to wait for me, Kyler," she adds with another glance at the boy.

"Whatever." He shakes his head and turns around to Red and Rickenberger behind him.

She isn't sure if she should consider them her friends. Red isn't that bad, he doesn't talk much, which Mercy appreciates, and isn't busy trying to get up Kyler's ass like Edwin does (besides that, Mercy can't really complain about him).

Rickenberger on the other hand is a little more complicated. He talks too much about too many things, just like Kyler, but he's not as annoying.
