Severus backed up from Hermione. She sighed and crossed her arms. "Sir, you were leaning against the cabinet looking longingly at the pensive," she stated matter-of-factly.
He walked away from her and went to his desk. He needed to put space between them. Being so close was getting to him. "I was thinking," he said hesitantly.
She scoffed and went to sit in her chair beside him. He forgot it was still beside him. He focused on an essay in front of him by a sixth year. It was already graded, but he needed to pretend he was busy. "What's wrong?" She placed a hand over his and nearly melted. His heart immediately stopped racing and calmed down. He found himself staring into her eyes again.
Severus felt himself leaning forward, but he couldn't stop it. As their lips touched, Severus' hand went to cup her face gently. Her lips were so soft. Hermione leaned more into the kiss. Severus broke the kiss and took a deep breath to calm down. He was getting excited and his heart was beating fast. He stood up and walked to the corner where a tray of sweets were waiting. He chose a piece of a chocolate frog and munched on it, trying to avoid Hermione.
Did he like the kiss? Absolutely. However, he felt as if he was breaking every rule he's every had for himself as well as school rules. The big one being no relationships between teachers and students. He also hated that he broke a big one he made for himself. Only love Lily. It was hard to deny it now.
"Severus," Albus called from his portrait in a soft voice.
"Don't Albus," Severus hissed, waving his arm around and pointing to the portrait. He had a frightened face hidden behind anger. Hermione sat in the chair watching him sneer at the previous headmaster. "I don't want to hear it."
Severus swallowed hard. The lump was back and this time wouldn't go away. He looked at all the portraits of the previous headmasters and headmistresses. They all had sympathetic looks on their faces. "Severus, 'the truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off'" Professor Dippet commented wisely.
Several others looked at him curiously. "What?" He asked defensively.
"Severus remember when you were in school. That day James Potter dangled you by your ankles under a tree outside. Lily came to your aid and you called her something that changed everything?" Albus asked, avoiding the word. Hermione narrowed her eyes, looking from the portrait to Severus.
He nodded, hoping that the man didn't say the word that he knew was cut into her skin forever. He hated that Bellatrix did that to her. He wished they could figure out a way to remove the scar, but much like his Dark Mark, it was permanent. He purposely looked at one of his books that was on his desk corner.
"What did I tell you then?" Albus asked mysteriously.
" 'You have to decide at some point whether you want to turn the page, write a new story, or close the book altogether, ' " Severus repeated flawlessly. He gritted his teeth as he thought about it. He knew what he was being told and he didn't like it.
Lily never loved him like he loved her. It was time for him to finally move on. He didn't like that idea, though. He didn't want to ruin Hermione by letting himself fall for her any farther than he already did.
"I will also add, 'We accept the love that we think we deserve,' " Albus continued.
Severus scoffed and waved him off. He went to the door to his room and gripped the doorknob. "Sir?"
He halted. He nearly forgot that she was here. Turning to face her, he was met by her lips again. He fell against the door, arms involuntarily wrapped around her waist. Her hands went to stroke his face as they continued to kiss partially hidden from the portraits in his office under the alcove.
Severus didn't want the moment to end. He pulled her against him, moaning as he deepened the kiss. She groaned as she finally broke the kiss, but Severus wasn't done. He moved to her neck and he heard Hermione gasp in pleasure as she gripped his hair tight in her fists. He gave a slight nip at her neck when he felt her pull his hair.
"Severus," Albus called with a warning tone, bringing Severus back from the pure bliss it was in. He broke away from Hermione and stood taller, panting hard. Hermione cleared her throat and straightened her clothes.
Severus and Hermione stared at each other for a long moment. "Please leave," Severus whispered hoarsely, staring at the ground in shame.
Hermione stepped forward and cupped his cheek, forcing him to look at her. He did, tears in his eyes. She touched her forehead to his and closed her eyes. "You deserve so much more than you think, Severus," she whispered to him.
