After Minerva left the office, Severus let out a long, deep breath that he didn't know he was holding. She had stayed for over an hour talking about Draco and the other 7th years. How their progress was and how all the students were fairing with another student teaching them. Just as Hermione had predicted, the older students weren't bullying the younger as much. In fact, the students that were once bullies were working hard in their classes to eventually be at the front of the class.
Severus had tried to cut the talk short three times, but Minerva wouldn't take the hint. In fact, she would purse her lips every time causing him to retreat to his school self and apologize for trying to interrupt her. She scared Severus, more now than when he was in school. Since their fight in the Great Hall, Severus had a new found respect for her. Don't think he hadn't respected her before, but being older than he and choosing to fight him, just had a certain effect on him.
As soon as he caught his breath, he rushed back to his room. Hermione was dressed fully and reading the book that had dropped to the floor by the fireplace. He could tell he startled her by her face. However, when she realized it was just him, she relaxed and gave a small smile. "Sir," she greeted sheepishly. She closed the book, but didn't put it down.
He chuckled at her shyness. After all they've done, she was shy. "Firstly, there's no need to be shy, now of all times," he said as he went to go sit beside her. He groaned as he sank down into the comfortable couch. His chair wasn't that great. "Second," he went on, placing an arm behind her and crossing his legs, "Don't call me Sir anymore."
Her eyes went wide at what he was basically telling her. She stuttered as she tried to articulate what she was thinking, "Uh, th-then what do want me to ca-call you?"
His hand that was behind her stroked her hair soothingly. "Severus," he said lowly, with a hint of a smile.
She nodded, gripping the book tighter. It seemed to be her life preserver at this point. He'd just read a muggle book about a ship that sunk on its maiden voyage. (HEHE) He licked his lips and nodded to himself. "Well, whenever you're ready, we can talk about what happened. On your own terms. For now, however, its nearly dinner, so you should head back to your dormitory."
Hermione set the book on the coffee table and stood up. She headed for the door with a tiny, but questioned pep to her step. It really seemed to match the thoughts he knew was running through her head. "Oh, Hermione," he called after her. She turned on her heels. He pulled out her wand from his sleeve. "Here."
He gave it a slight toss and she had to dip down to catch it. She flicked the tip at him in thanks and left. He leaned his head back against the back of the couch and covered his face with his hands. He hoped she wouldn't grow to regret what happened. Another problem that just hit him like a rouge bludger was Ron. She was still with Weasley. He didn't want her reputation to plunder by stepping out on him. However, he couldn't help but admit that he was hooked on her.
When he went back to his office to get ready for dinner, Albus halted him at the door. "Severus," he called from his portrait. Severus turned around to face him. "The course of true love never did run smooth," he said with a mysterious smile. Severus raised an eyebrow. He could have swore he had heard that quote somewhere in the muggle world. He shrugged as he headed to dinner.
Minerva was keeping a close watch on him. Her eyes kept shooting to him and wherever he looked. He was getting a little irritated. Finally, after she leaned forward to check the connecting eyes of him and Hermione, she narrowed her own slightly. "Minerva, why are you constantly looking at me tonight?" He was attempting to keep his cool.
She took a bite of her fish and chewed it slowly before answering. Severus shuffled some of his veggies around on his plate, didn't eat yet. "You acted strange in your office earlier, Severus."
"And your point?" He asked with a warning tone.
Chuckling, she kept eating. "Severus, you are good under pressure, but when its not life or death, but matters of the heart, you are terrible. You have been avoiding Hermione's eyes all evening, yet she can't seem to stop looking at you."
He realized that. She couldn't stop looking at him with the look of a lovesick teenager. Of course, she was a teenager, but he doubted that she was lovesick. He didn't answer Minerva. He took a big bite of his chicken and chewed slowly and carefully. Every bite he thought of Hermione in his bed. She was so beautiful laying there.
"Severus," Minerva touched his arm. He jerked it away and looked at her with fear. He wasn't expecting her touch. He was lost in his own world of her and him. "Are you okay?"
"Yes, Minerva, I'm fine," he stated shortly. Gritting his teeth, he looked once more at Hermione, who was talking to Ginny Weasley beside her, before leaving the table.
He was sitting in his chair in his office with his hands on his head, staring into space. He wasn't expecting anyone. His lesson plans were done, he had no other homework to grade. Even the speech was completely done, thanks to Hermione's help. He tapped his boot against his desk rhythmically. He wasn't expecting someone to knock, or enter without his okay.
He was about to unleash his anger on whoever entered without his say so, but the familiar hair of Hermione caught his eye. His anger melted away as soon as she closed the door. He stood and went around his desk, fingers trailing across the edge until he settled on the other side, leaning. He had a pleasant smile on his face, watching her stroll to him.
She placed her hands on his hips and kissed him. He momentarily froze, not expecting it. When his brain caught up with what was happening, he kissed back, wrapping his own arms around her waist. They broke apart after a little bit, satisfied for a while. He gently rubbed her back as he asked, "What was that for?"
"An apology for when I left. I was unnecessarily shy and I apologize."
He laughed heartily. "Hermione," he said, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face, "you have nothing to apologize for. It was sudden and shocking."
She looked at the floor, ashamed. "Then why do I feel guilty?"
The loving smiled faded from his face. He looked away, not wanting to say. "Perhaps you feel torn between your brain and your heart."
Her eyes went wide as soon as he finished speaking, hands flinging to her mouth and she stepped back away from Severus. "Ron," she said behind her hands. She stomped on the ground angrily. "How could I forget?"
"Perhaps because he hasn't spoken to you since he called you thick and a teachers pet." Severus was calm and cool, watching as she paced worriedly.
"What will everyone say?" She asked herself, not giving him any indication that he was heard. Oddly enough, it didn't bother him. Usually if he wasn't heard, then he'd make himself heard. However, he was content this time.
"Why do they have to know?" Severus asked, not as sure if he'd be heard.
She stopped her pacing and looked at him. "What? An affair?"
He shrugged as if it happened every day. "Why not?"
"It's wrong, Severus," she said shocked.
She said it. His name. It flowed out of her mouth so flawlessly. He twitched happily. "You can't leave the school grounds. Weasley won't come visit or write you back. You're stuck in the relationship."
"Who said I wanted to end it?" Her hands shot to her hips, heated.
He strolled over to where she stood by the pensive. Quickly, she lost her anger and started panting. Stepping back, she collided with the cabinet door. Severus quickly invaded her space and took her hands in his. In one swift motion, he had her arms pinned above her. He leaned closer to her face and brushed his lips against her cheek. She whimpered and leaned her head back against the cabinet.
"I know you don't want him, Hermione." His free hand traveled down her body to her waist where he cupped her butt and squeezed. She quickly wrapped her legs around his own waist and tried to pull him closer to him. He laughed, biting her neck lightly. "I know you don't want to leave this room, much less end whatever this is."
