The new girl. That’s how I felt while I walked down the boardwalk to my Aunt Sally’s bakery. Everyone looked at me like I was some foreign object, some alien. Did I have something in my teeth? Was my hair totally crappy? I kept wondering to myself. I wasn’t one to question my looks usually. I felt good about myself each and everyday. And back home guys would be questioning who the girl walking down the street was, not staring at me like I was a freak.
I finally reach building number 206 and walk in, the bell above the door giving out its little ring. “Aunt Sally!” I call out and an old woman appears from the back kitchen.
“hey darling!” she says, pulling me into a hug, “so glad you could come this summer.”
“wouldn’t miss it.” I tell her, grinning from ear to ear. I pull along my turquoise luggage and rearrange my army duffle on my shoulder, “where should I set these things?” I ask her.
“oh! Follow me, you’ll be sharing a room with your cousin.” Okay, wait, last time I checked my cousin was a 18 year old guy. Did you get that? G-U-Y!
“um, you talking about Tyler?”
“yes, who else dear?”
"You do realize he’s a…he? And I’m a…she? Right?”
“of course I do Lindsey.” She tells me, “but don’t worry, Tyler won’t try anything and if he does, just tell me and he’s out.”
“does my mom know about this?” I ask, still unsure. I mean, I know she would be totally against this.
“how stupid do you think I am? Not in a life time would I tell Judy I was putting you in the same room as my son.”
“okay, just making sure.”
We walk into a clean room that was painted deep purple. One bed was obviously already taken while the other was empty. Sally walks over to the window and pulls the curtains open, letting the sunlight spill in.
There’s a grown coming from the taken bed, “I don’t have school today, I can sleep in.” Tyler says, his voice muffled by his pillow.
“in your dreams. You have work and your cousin just showed up.” Sally says, opening the window some. A fresh breeze of the ocean filled the room.
“so what? Takes me like five minutes to get dressed and who cares if Lindsey’s here. You’re the only one who wanted her to come.”
I look up at Sally with my eyes raised, she expected me to stay in a room with this guy? She shrugs and leaves. Tyler stays in the bed and I become quite impatient. Being the little angel I am, I lift my luggage and plop down on top of him. He yelps.
“what the hell!” he screams at me.
“oops, is this bed taken?” I ask innocently, “sorry.” I lift my bag and go over to the empty bed.
“what in the world do you have in there? Your best friend or something?!”
"You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” I press my lips together in a smirk and turn back to my bag.
At last years family get together I had my best friend, Tally, with me. Tyler followed her like a little puppy dog, wouldn’t leave her side at all.
“I can’t believe you have to be here this summer.” He says, getting out of bed and walking down the hall.
“love you too cuz!” I yell after him before going back downstairs to the store.
You’re probably wondering why I’m here. Well, I make cakes. Damn good cakes at that. One of my aunts long time bakers just got ill and she needed someone quick. So, with no other summer plans, I got sent to live with them, and well, bake. I get paid, I get to live on the beach, and I get to do what I love best, make cakes.
“okay, so here are your orders for today, there’s only three. Once you’re done, tell me and I’ll give you the address so that you can deliver them.” My aunt hands me to papers and then starts to walk away.
“um, Sally?” I say to get her attention, she turns to face me again.
“yes?”
“I don’t drive.” I inform her.
“oh, um, I’ll have Tyler drive you then.”
“okay.” With that I put on my apron that I brought from home and get to work.
I finished all the cakes and started to frost them when Sally entered the kitchen again, “I need to run to the store. The front will be open, so if you hear the bell, just help the costumer. It’s pretty basic stuff.” I nod, focusing on the design I had to get done and she was gone.
I don’t know how long it was but the bell in the front started ringing, which made me drop my pack of frosting. I curse and step over the frosting and into the front of the bakery. Most probably would’ve at least wiped the flour off of their faces before entering, but I was too tired to do that at the moment. I push through the door and behind the counter, only to regret not cleaning up.
A teenage guy, probably about seventeen or so stood with his back to me, examining all the treats we had out.
I cough to get his attention and he turns around. He was that normal ‘it’ guy with short brown hair and dark eyes. His skin was fairly tan, but not some fake one, it was defiantly natural, and he was well built, but nottoo built. “how can I help you?” I ask, wiping my hands on a towel that was on the counter.
The guy looks me up and down before meeting my eyes and smiling, I cock an eyebrow at him, “oh, um, I’m looking for Tyler.”
I roll my eyes, “of course you are. I’ll be right back.” I untie the back of my apron and quickly take it off before skipping steps upstairs. “yo, get your lazy ass up off that couch. Your friend’s downstairs waiting for you.” I tell him, he snarls and throws a cushion at me. “I’m not kidding, there’s really a guy down there for you.” I tell him before closing the door. I jog back down the stairs. “he’ll be right down.” The guy nods and I return to the kitchen.
