River got out of the bush with his arms raised, and he had scared/surprised expression on his face.
"Woah, now, Hazel..."
Hazel lost her angry look and seemed surprised, before lowering her fists and scowling.
"Do you follow me everywhere or something? Scarlette was right..."
River chuckled nervously.
"N-No, I just saw you running into the forest. Chasing someone... who was it?"
"It was... the person who set the school on fire."
"By any chance, did you chase them throughout the school before coming to the parking lot and forest?"
She seemed confused.
"Yeah, how'd you know?"
River smiled and pointed to the soot on her face. Hazel wiped her cheek and looked at her hand. It was indeed very black, with a bit of blood from the embers that had fallen on her.
"Oh... well, you should go back to the others."
River stopped smiling and looked serious.
"So should you."
"No, I have to keep chasing that person and make them pay."
"No, you need to come back to the others. Besides, they're all safe. We live close to a police station, remember? They'll catch the criminal."
"They won't. This case is too advanced for the police. And even if the FBI gets involved, they'll take a long time to solve it."
River cocked an eyebrow at Hazel's stubbornness.
"And you think you'll be able to find the person faster than them?"
She flushed.
'Damn, I didn't think that through...'
"N-No, I just meant that-"
River cut her off, sighing.
"Hazel, you need to come back to the school."
Hazel's eyes narrowed.
"No."
River looked at her with annoyance, wanting to say something. In the end, though, he just ended up laughing. Hazel was confused. Her face definitely showed it because River tried explaining next.
"S-Sorry... I've just never seen you so stubborn before. Actually, I've never seen you even a little stubborn before. You were always so shy and quiet. It's quite the change, if you ask me."
River kept chuckling, and Hazel sighed.
"Listen, you should just go back to the school. I need to catch this criminal."
River finally regained himself.
"No. I'm not going back. And you don't need to."
Hazel groaned.
"Then where are you going?"
River stepped forwards.
"I'm coming with you."
Hazel let out a surprised gasp, and River smirked.
"What? Am I not good enough to come? Besides, my power is water. I can help you. Not to be rude, but uh... you don't really.. have a power..."
River gave a nervous grin, as Hazel crossed her arms in irritation.
"Actually, I do have one. Actually, how do you even know I didn't have one?! Only Scarlette knew... and... Ebony..."
