Jake
"Jake, stop pacing the floor like an expectant father." Louisa chastised me as I walked past her for what was most likely the thousandth time already. "You're going to wear a hole in Hazel's carpet."
I reluctantly took a seat beside my sister on the small, uncomfortable, two seater lounge just to stop her nagging me but I couldn't relax, my entire body was wound so tight. My mind was ticking off everything that could go wrong and the longer we sat here, the more that list was growing.
"Why is it taking so long?" I groaned, staring down the long, dark hallway where I saw Hazel and her friend, Kayla, take Hannah.
"They're extracting a soul from a body Jake." Louisa pointed out, as if I didn't realise what was going on. "I'm pretty sure that this is one process you don't want them to rush."
I hate when she's right, which is often but what I hate more is how calm she can be in a crisis. I wish I knew how she manages to keep her cool in every situation thrown her way.
"Lou, what if I lose her?" I let my biggest fear spill out and feel Louisa's comforting hand on my back, soothing me like our mother use to when we were just pups. I take deep, heavy breaths, trying hard to control the stress before it consumes me.
"Oh Jake, no." She exclaims, embracing me tightly. "You can't think like that, we have to remain positive that this will work."
"Sorry Louisa, my positivity all went out the window about an hour ago." I apologise to my sister, slumping back into the lounge. "I just wish Hazel or Kayla would come out of that room and give us some insight into how it's going."
"The next full moon is only two weeks away." Louisa says in her cheerful, sing-song voice, completely ignoring my concerns.
"And you're pointing this out to me because?" I ask her, dumbfounded as to why the moon's cycle is even relevant right now. I've got bigger things to worry about than the full moon, especially when we have one every month.
"Jake, did you just completely skip sex ed at school?" She giggles, giving me a playful nudge. "The first night of the full moon, each month, is the only time a she-wolf can get pregnant." She emphasise her statement by rubbing her heavily pregnant belly and I roll my eyes at her but chuckle.
"Lou, do I need to remind you that Hannah and I haven't even marked each other yet, let alone thought about pups." I tell her.
"Well you might want to move quickly on that." She says sternly and I look at her confused. "The marking I mean. Unmarked she-wolves have a horrendous time once the full moon causes them to go into heat."
Once again, she was right. I hadn't even had time to think about what affect the full moon would have on Hannah if left unmarked, the heat and pain that she'd suffer through, not to mention it would make her a target for any unmarked wolf to prey upon.
"Do you think humans have problems like ours?" I ponder out loud. Apart from Angelica, I've had little interaction with humans. "Do you think their lives are controlled by the moon cycles?"
"I don't imagine so." Louisa answers me, sighing to herself. "I do believe that the Moon Goddess has a dark sense of humour though, to make sure her pairings have little options of living in intense pain for one night a month or getting marked by your mate."
"I don't want Hannah suffering any more pain." I say, vowing to myself that I will do whatever I can to stop Hannah hurting.
"Speaking of suffering." Louisa says, giving me the wide eyes of judgement. "When are you going to set us all free of Angelica?"
