Emma

"I had that dream again last night, the one with the kids, this time they were playing near an old oak tree. The girl is so strong for her age, she only looked to be around 7 or 8 but she could easily bring the boy down and he's older than her" I told my dad as I was drinking my cup of tea before bed, my father, every night without fail, brews a pot of tea and we sit and chat. He's all I have in this world, all I've ever had since I can remember. We live in the small town of Tingira, at the top of the hill that overlooks the the old wooden house. I like to look out my bedroom window each night and imagine who lives there, the house is huge and it's always lit up at night. Between our house and the old wooden house there is forest, my father tells me that theres a giant cemetery in the middle of the forest, he used to tell me stories about a nest of vampires who would stay in the cemetery crypts during the day and wander the forrest at night, searching for people to feast upon. My Father was very over protective, sometimes I think he would make up these stories to keep me from going outside but for once in my life I wish I could just walk beyond our front gate and see what the world is like.

"I wouldn't worry about it too much Emma, last night was the full moon, it most likely caused you to conjure up some crazy dream again, like you've said before, you always have these dreams on the night of the full moon" My dad reasons with me, he right too, for the past two years, every night that there's a full moon I've dreamt of Hannah and Jake, the dreams are so vivid too, I can see Jake's face clearly, his sea blue eyes, his short brown hair and his olive skin, as for Hannah though, I am always viewing the dream through her eyes, I know she has long blonde hair and pale skin, when I dream of her I feel powerful, like I can do anything and I sense that Jake is in awe of her.

"Maybe I have these dreams because I'm cooped up in here all day, maybe it's my spirit child, longing for adventure" I exclaim, dancing around our kitchen. I've been begging Dad to let me leave the house since I was 16 and now, on the eve of my 18th birthday I crave it even more but I know he won't allow it, he says it's too dangerous out there "for a girl like me" whatever that means. I've tried asking but he shuts down or changes the subject and still I get nowhere. I'm destined to be bored little Emma of Tingira, stuck inside the brick house on the hill forever.

"Maybe your spirit child should go to bed because tomorrow is your 18th birthday pumpkin, you don't want to be tired for your big day" Dad suggests, taking my cup from me, I head into the bathroom and brush my teeth before climbing into bed, I pull my dream journal out from under my pillow, ready in case tonight I dream of Hannah and Jake again, although being the night after a full moon it is unlikely I'll see them, my dad switches out my light and closes the bedroom door and I lay in bed, looking out the window, my eyes are drawn to the old wooden house as I see the light in a room be turned on. I love looking at the old house, I love imaging myself living there, walking the halls and running up the stairs, I bet they have a giant kitchen where a maid cooks them eloquent meals whenever they want and nobody is kept prisoner.

I can hear the wolves at the base of the forest howling at something, they do this often lately, dad says it's because they've crossed paths with one of the creatures of the night, that this is their battle cry but tonight the howling is getting closer to our home, whatever is out there has taken on more than it bargained for. Then theres the loud sound of a scuffle, moving closer, I scan out my window, trying to locate where they are fighting, I'm a little bit excited I must admit, we've never had them this close to home before but my excitement soon turns to fear when I notice a pair of glowing red eyes staring back at me as it starts stalking closer to our house.

"Dad, there's a vampire coming towards our house" I yell out to my father, not taking my eyes off the two red balls of flame as they come into view, I can now see the silhouette of a woman as she moves in closer towards, the wolf is long gone so I know there is nothing out there to challenge the vampire but I also know that I am safe if I stay inside my house, vampires can't come in unless invited in and it would be a could day in hell before either my father or I would be putting out that invitation. I hear our front door swing open and see my dad step outside.

"You can't be here, leave" He yells at the vampire who is now standing inside our yard, she breaks her gaze from me to look at him

"I smell power, I wanna taste" She tells him, showing off her fangs. Why would my dad even go out there? He has always warned me about the dangers of going outside after the sun has gone down but here he is trying to reason with a demon on our front lawn.

"She is not for you and you know it" He yells back at her, I can see he is not unarmed, he has in his hand a wooden stake, we've always kept stakes in the house for protection, he trained me on how to use one if I ever needed to.

"Everything is mine for the taking you stupid old man, you've been such a fool, keeping her weak for us for years, stripping her power back to nothing, we convinced you that you were protecting her when really, you were just giving us a tasty meal to feast on that wont fight back" The vampire laughs, looking at me and licking her lips

"You wont get her, she's mine and I will protect her with my life" My dad says sternly, holding the stake up

"You really think you can take me on alone, you're an even bigger fool than what I gave you credit for John" She tells him, closing the gap between them. How does she know his name? And why would she even want me? He holds the stake up and makes his move, trying to plow it into her chest with force but she takes hold of his arm before it hits it's intended target, pulling him close to her, my dad looks up to my window, I can see the fear in his eyes, he failed and now will pay with his life, the vampire, not letting her eyes leave mine, wraps her hands around his neck and within a flash she snaps it and his lifeless body falls to the ground, she steps over him and I hear the front door creak open, followed by footsteps walking to my door, that's impossible, how could she come in without an invitation? I grab the stake that I have under my bed, slide my window up and climb out just as my bedroom door slams open.

Run Emma, run.
