Emma

The sunlight blazing into the room woke me from my deep sleep, ugh, I'd forgotten to pull the blind down last night before going to bed. I could hear noises coming from the kitchen, the clanging of a pan, music playing and the occasional curse word. Great, Jake was awake.

Shit! If Jake saw the wolf I'd be in so much trouble. Panic ran through me as I peered over the side of the bed but was relieved to find the wolf had gone.

"Emma if you want pancakes I'm making them" I hear Jake call from the kitchen. I loved pancakes, soft, fluffy deliciousness, smothered in syrup. Dad knew that if I was angry at him that a stack of pancakes could fix my mood instantly, they were my weakness.

I pulled myself out of bed, I may hate the man but I could still enjoy the foods he made. Making my way into the kitchen I see Jake standing with his back to me attending to the fry pan, he's shirtless, wearing only pyjama bottoms and I can see every crafted muscle in his back, I can't help but stare.

"Yum" the words escaped my mouth before I even had a chance to process them and he turns around to look at me, sly smile on his face.

"You like?" He asks, a question that is so loaded, I can feel the blush forming on my cheeks, hot, burning red but I have no where to hide my face and he knows it.

"Pancakes? Yes... muchly" I stutter, trying to draw my eyes away from his bare chest,. Look up Emma, stop staring at the arsehole who made you cry last night, stop fantasying about running your tongue over those abs. He turns back to the frying pan and I swear I hear him mumbling to himself but I sit there quietly, not wanting a repeat of last night, being yelled at and told to shut up so I allow the silence to fill the room as I play with the hem of my pyjama top, listening to the sound of the utensil hitting the pan. Jake places a plate in front of me with a small stack of pancakes and a cup of coffee then points to the offering of syrup, butter, whipper cream and jam that are spread across the counter top.

"I didn't know what you'd like so I grabbed a small selection of things, I've never made breakfast for anyone before."

I give him a small smile as thanks before drowning my pancakes in butter and syrup. I take in the first mouthful and can't help letting in out a small moan, oh my, these taste so good, so soft and fluffy with a small hint of buttermilk, nothing like the shake and bake ones I'm used to. Jake places his plate on the countertop next to me and sits in the stool. Oh no, was I meant to wait for him? I've probably broken another rule and he will most likely raise his voice to me, again. Shit! I place my knife and fork back down and wait for him to begin, he looks over at me, confused look crossing his face before shaking his head and turning back to his own breakfast.

"So, do you have a boyfriend?" He asks me ever so casually and I almost choke on breakfast. What? Where did that come from? He's so odd.

"I really don't think that that's any of your business and out of all the questions you could ask to get to know me better that's the one you thought would be most appropriate?"

"Calm the fuck down Emma, there you go again, jumping to conclusions, I was simply asking so I can gauge if there's someone out there looking for you" Jake laughs at me and shakes his head and I feel that familiar burning sensation reach my cheeks, of course he wasn't trying to get to know me, why would he? To Jake, I'm just his unwanted house guest.

My thoughts are broken by the sound of the front door opening, followed by footsteps on the hardwood floor and children laughing. A small child comes barrelling into the kitchen.

"Uncle Jake" The toddler exclaims as he runs up to Jake, arms wide open, silently begging to be lifted and I watch, amused as Jake caves into the request.

"I see your nose has magically grown back after I took it yesterday Caldon" Jake jokes too the child. The little boy places his hand on his nose to confirm that it's there and then giggles.

"You take Caleb's nose, he be mean to me" The. boy accuses his brother, who enters the room, shyly holding tightly to Louisa's skirt.

"Caldon, Uncle Jake doesn't want to hear tales of naughty boys who refused to eat their breakfast" Louisa chastises her child who looks at Jake and giggles before taking a liking to the pancakes in front of him, reaching his tiny fingers out to tear off small amounts. The two children are identical, almost looking like smaller versions of Jake with their dark brown hair, olive skin and blue eyes and it's fascinating to watch Jake, the same man who yelled at me in front of a crowded room last night is completely at the mercy of these two children, cutting up his pancakes and shifting some onto another plate for the boys to share as he places the child and the plate on the floor.

"Thank you Tin Man" Louisa laughs, coming to sit beside me on a stool at the bench, she lets out a sigh as she rubs her swallow belly, I take in her appearance, her sleek black hair is pulled back, revealing a scar on her neck, I hadn't noticed that yesterday. She, once again, looks exhausted but has tried to conceal it with make up.

"How did you sleep Emma?" She asks me, her eyes shifting between me and back to Jake, trying to read the room that she's entered into.

"I slept like a baby, that bed is so comfortable, it felt like I was sleeping on a cloud"

"More comfy than sleeping on the floor" Jake adds, rubbing his neck. He's so weird, why would he sleep on the floor when theres another bedroom here?
